Illinois' problem is that they are near historically bad on the defensive glass this year. The combination of that with an off shooting night is impossible to overcome.

Brian Cook:

NNANNA EGWU WATCH: DREB rate has dropped(!!!) from 11.3 to 10.2. Illinois DREB rate is now in the 200s. Every Illinois player save Sam McLaurin is beating him out. [uM 5'11 Freshman PG] Spike Albrecht now full point ahead of him. There are literally no pictures on GIS of Egwu bringing in a rebound in college. IlliniHQ does bring us the shot at right of the dude nearly decapitating some other dude, though.

i'm just gonna go ahead and count those as final four years for purdue.

Nobody's saying Purdue was cheated out of the Final Four. However, fault them for not making the Final Four and I think it's only fair to point out that they had a pretty good excuse why they didn't.

abuck is just a troll. He takes shots at everyone elses teams despite being a suporter of Iowa State. They have almost zero historical success in basketball or football.

I never understood the premise that you can't say anything about any other teams if the team you root for isn't good.

That's not what I said.

'can't say anything' is not equal to trolling and taking pot shots for no reason. What is the point of trolling when your team is [expletive]?

'your team sucks!'

yeah... well your team sucks too, and actually it's one of the least succesful major conference programs ever in the two revenue sports...

Now if he wants to debate the impact Hummel's knee injury had on Purdue's tournament success I'm all ears.

They won a GoDaddy.com Bowl against Pitt once.

Hummel was the "glue" guy of those teams. Purdue would've went deeper in tournaments had it been Moore or JJJ getting injured instead of Hummel IMO. Still sucks that the 2 years that Purdue had a good chance getting to championship game was the 2 years Hummel blew out his knee.

Heck Purdue last year should've been in the sweet 16 and beat Kansas, but Purdue sucks and played not to lose instead of playing to win the last couple minutes in that game.

the fun of it is based on the fact that i don't really give a [expletive] that iowa state sucks at sports, while your entire identity as a human being is seemingly tied to how good your favorite stupid sports team is.

you can say iowa state sucks and i would agree. i say jimmy claussen sucks and andy cries. i can say purdue is garbage and you post for seven hours about robbie hummel's knee injury. that's the difference between me and you/andy.

Robbie Hummel.

Greatest European league player ever? Or third best player on his loaded college team that barely made a second weekend?

That is the away factor, I can live with that. If and it's a big if, you don't let purdue play football at home. Last night the second half was crazy. Your guys grabbed and held. That's not good defense, it's fouling. Other conferences call that crap regardless of venue, that's why their scores aren't laughable.

I've seen these complaints for games in Champaign though...

Gee where is the link to purdue when that was happening? Oh yes the long time assistant that was coaching us.

It's a college basketball thread on a sports message board. If the people around here didn't care about sports they wouldn't be posting here. If they didn't care (more specifically) about college basketball they wouldn't be posting in this specific thread (or reading it). It's really strange that you go to an extremely specific thread and mock people for discussing the topic the thread was designed to discuss.

Why? What's the point? Plus, hell, you've got almost 20K posts in the same time period I've got less than 6k posts. If you think my identity is tied up in sports, what do you have to say for yourself?

In the five games before the purdue game Brandon Paul was 36 for 47 from the free throw line. Last night he was 1 for 1. While be knocked to the floor several times. Just good clean defense.

How many jump shots did he take? I only remember him driving to the rim two times, once he had an easy layup and once he got called for a charge. 7 of his 10 shots were from 3.

edit: plus the one free throw he did shoot was a terrible foul call. he kicked his leg out at Terone tryign to draw contact and didn't even connect but they called a foul on Terone.

But, but, that's just the awesome defense of Purdue, they, being in the Big Ten in all, know how to play defense like no other team.

There were several times he got to the lane and was crushed.

There were several times Terone was crushed with no call too.

At least 4 times, that play at the end still pisses me off the most, Byrd committed two and probably more infractions, he hooked and pushed off McLaurin and he traveled with the ball while attempting to call time out.

The first press in the second half your guy, a Johnson I'm sure, fouls Paul. Knocks the ball loose, then tackles him to the floor. Play on.

Yeah it's frustrating, even our team in 05 who beat everyone's brains in had to come from behind and then when they got the lead Pudue couldn't foul us at the end to shoot free throws because they had one team foul. You know, cause that can happen in a major college game. Playing defense so well you don't foul but one time in 19 minutes. Boiler up!

Don't forget, in the words of Weber, DJ Byrd is a "player", perhaps, that's why he's immune to such calls.

“We never got (Terone) Johnson under control,” UI coach John Groce said, “and Byrd made the tough plays at the end. They were the best two players on the floor."

What is he supposed to say Smack? After his first game in the big ten go off about how horrible the officiating is? He's not some boob who spent two decades as an assistant coach. He's right about the dribble penetration though it's been killing us for weeks now.
