Perhaps Purdue is more successful than ISU, but from an outside perspective, they seem like one of the most boring programs in college sports.

I certainly wouldn't disagree with that being Purdue's perception. Painter runs a defense first program that isn't flashy offensively. Especially without Moore, Johnson and Hummel. I wouldn't be watching them like I do if I wasn't a big fan. I think we've got some guys on the way that will get us back to a more offense oriented team, but not right now. Hammons is the only player on the roster right now that is likely to play in the NBA. The Illinois people will laugh at me but Jay Simpson might have that upside too. Painter said Simpson is the most talented player on the roster and he's had Hummel, Johnson, and Landry so he knows a talented forward.

Bill self coached deron Williams and said last year that Thomas Robinson was the best player he ever coached. That's called coach speak.

“We never got (Terone) Johnson under control,” UI coach John Groce said, “and Byrd made the tough plays at the end. They were the best two players on the floor."

What is he supposed to say Smack? After his first game in the big ten go off about how horrible the officiating is? He's not some boob who spent two decades as an assistant coach. He's right about the dribble penetration though it's been killing us for weeks now.

He didn't have to call out Byrd by name and praise him. Plus, gflore threw out the Weber quote like he's an idiot for praising Byrd. I was just pointing out your current coach says the same thing. Byrd got a lot of praise from the media last night.

I thought Byrd played like crap, he stuck a couple of threes but you should if you shoot as many as he does. I won't praise him for that rebound at the end, he broke three rules while doing it. I would trade our DJ for him though, I don't get how anyone can think our DJ is value added.

Ignoring the Purdue/Illinois game for a moment, I don't see how anybody disagrees that that B1G officiating is awful. I completely agree that the level of physicality in the B1G versus the NCAA tournament is a huge disadvantage to B1G teams. It's just a fact that home teams have a HUGE advantage over their visitors. I've only very rarely seen where a home team gets jobbed by the officials (usually in the form of Ted Valentine, but not always). How do you think Michigan St. has has such an enormous rebounding edge at home? Wisconsin's unbelievable home record? I could go on.

It's been like this for as long as I can remember -- and that's longer than I care to think about.

Don't know if I'd take either of them but, I do agree, the Illini' DJ sucks big time. Isn't he some god awful 9-50 in last 5 or so games?

Home court winning percentages drive home the fact that the home court advantage in Division I college basketball is not a myth. The midpoint of the current 344 home court winning percentages is 68.2%, with half of those teams' winning percentages above it and half below it. A total of 35 schools have winning percentages of 80% or above, 143 schools have winning percentages of 70% or above, 273 have winning percentages of 60% or better, and 326 schools have winning percentages of 50% or better.

Only 4 B1G teams in the Top 25 for home court winning percentage. I'm not defending B1G officiating, I'm just saying that's the way Men's D1 College Basketball works.

This, I know I am using last nights game here still, but with two little kids I dont get to watch very many games anymore. But there were 5 call last night that should get someone in trouble.

1. That foul on Brandon paul shooting the three. There isn't even close to contact. Horrible call.

2. The play with around 10 minutes left where Tyler Griffey shot fakes and D.J. Byrd lands on him. That has to be a call, either it is a defensive foul or a player control on griffey. That's how people get hurt, you cannot not call a foul on that.

3. At one point in the second half we are pressing and have a purdue Johnson trapped in the backcourt against the sideline. Ted Valentine whistels for a time out. Painter says he didn't signal for one. So it becomes a sideout. What? That cannot happen. There was going to be either a forced pass or a ten second call happening, but instead the referees broke the press for Purdue.

4. In the second half one of your Johnson's drove and threw the ball out of bounds, on replay Brandon hit it then the Johnson kid hit it again trying to guide it to a Purdue player no one touched the ball. Purdue ball. It literally touched no one and really wasn't even close to touching anyone.

5. The last sequence of factor. As Tim pointed out Byrd fouled, traveled, and was rewarded a timeout. At that point momentum had swung and we were going to get a shot to win the game. I mean does anyone thing our chuckers wouldnt have shot a three at that point?

All of these were horrible miss calls. The type that make me hate following a big ten team. Let the better team win ffs, regardless of where the game is at.

I can't believe he plays as much as he does. I wish Bertrand started over him. I know Joe can't guard a chair, but at least he can score. D.J. is struggling with both.

Lol, Gonzaga is way more talented than the rest of their league every year, Kentucky is more talented than everyone now, Memphis great team in a bad conference, and Kansas is always as good as anyone. So yeah not really suprised to see them at the top. I just think it's funny that some of the big ten teams are on there even while having some awful teams during that era.

Agree on 1, 2, and 3. I don't remember 4. As for 5, I'm going to ignore the foul portion and refer you to Ken Pomeroy who quoted a whole bunch of rules on his twitter feed last night stating that what Byrd did was legal in regard to sliding/falling out of bounds/time out.

A.R. 132. Is it traveling when a player:

(3) Gains control of the ball while sliding on the playing court

and then, because of momentum, rolls or slides, after which

the player passes or starts a dribble before getting to his or

her feet?

(3) No. The player may pass, shoot, start a dribble or call a timeout.

Man, I don't know about his explaination of 5. I mean that may in fact be the rule, but that isn't at all how that is called. And do you honestly believe that had the roles been reversed and Brandon Paul got that rebound over Hammonds that would have been called that way?

That's not really his explanation, that's the actual rule from the rule book. Would it have been called the same if it was Paul? I don't know. I don't think you can say 100% it wouldn't have been. It was called correctly though, according to the rule, and he was legal calling the timeout even though he was leaning out of bounds because he was still on the ground. We could argue about the foul till we're blue in the face and never agree on that part of it.

And those 5 don't even touch the foul called on Egwu when Hammonds tripped over his own two feet and lost his balance in the middle of the lane without the ball.

You really didn't think that was a foul? really?

Carry on gentlemen.

Sorry I do think it is an interesting debate. Big Ten referees are the worst.

I don't think it's a call a B1G official makes on the road in conference play. I think you would be extremely pissed if it were called on Paul at Assembly. It was an end of game after free throw struggle in the trenches. Anything short of a punch or elbow probably isn't going to get called.

He tackled our guy. I'd only be pissed because I have been conditioned to think that's ok in the big ten. I'm telling you in rec leagues that gets called. That's how fights happen.

Haha, fight worthy? It was less physical than when Paul obliterated Lawson that led to the free throws.

Both play was ridiculous. It was a foul on Byrd IMO.

The thing was we tried fouling that whole possession and strangely enough they wouldn't call one that time until the mugging. In other words the refs helped out the home team by not calling the foul right away to preserve more clock.

Holy raping batman, they just took a game winner away from Colorado. Even though one replay clearly showed it was off in time, college basketball is a joke.
