I'll be surprised if he's not out for a while with some sort of surgery based on how awkwardly he went down.

well his knee is blown out. can a guy really pitch with a torn acl? if he undergoes surgery his season is definitely over.

he'd be 43 next year. the question isn't really if he's still good enough, because he definitely is and probably could go until he's 50, but it sounded like this might be his last year.

In my defense, the post above mine went up while I was typing so I didn't know he'd been diagnosed with the torn ACL.

And no, there's no way you could pitch with a torn ACL. That ligament stabilizes your knee when you're making any kind of lateral movement, so he would probably fall down every time he tried to push off the rubber.

orioles are 19-9. this is clearly due to going back to the cartoon bird logo.

The AL East standings are completely upside-down.

Speaking of surprsing eastern teams, I was looking at the Nats offesnive stats and wondering how the hell they're so good. Than I saw tbhat their worst starting pitcher has a 3.69 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP, 2nd worst is 2.29/0.99 and the rest are all <2.00/<1.00, and that will do it. How long they can keep that up remains to be seen.

As for the O's:

Wieters .301/.381/.602

Jones .304/.350/.591

Davis .299/.343/.526

Reimold (recentkly DLd) .313/.333/.627

They have 3 regular relievers with ERAs of 0.00 and <1.00 WHIP, a 4th who's not too far behind, Jason Hammel finally looks like a CY Young candidate, and Chinese import Wei-Yin Chen, who I believe we were looking at at one point has been very good as well.

Again, remains to be seen how long they can keep it up.

Jason Hammel finally is a Cy Young candidate? Were you waiting for this? He was a decent prospect like a decade ago...This is probably a false alarm.

Great to see their bat talents (Weiters and Jones) are standing out. Both of them have he talent to knock a season out of the park.

Not sure where to put this, but didn't want to start a new thread. But damn am I out of the loop on baseball.

I just found out yesterday that Robin Ventura is the manager for the WhiteSox. When did this happen?

We probably shouldn't tell him that Kosuke Fukudome is their right fielder.

I'll never forget the drunk as hell white trash Sox fans screaming [expletive] YOU DO ME, for about 10 minutes straight, right in my ear at the cell back in 2008. I was wearing a Fukudome shirt. Later those guys got into a fight with some other Sox fans next to them and they proceeded to beat the [expletive] out of each other. Everyone was a loser, literally and figuratively, in that fight. It was fantastic.

Don't know if I've ever seen or heard of this happening, but the Rays 1st 5 hitters all started off the game without an official AB.

3 walks, a sac fly, and a HBP to start the game. The 6th and 7th hitters have both singled. And the Rays start off the game 2 for 2 with 4 runs scored.

Edit: then 8th hitter hits into a double play. So, at the end of the 1st, the Rays hitters only made an out in 1 official AB, but scored 4 runs.

There was also another cool little stat today:

Today was the first game since 1925 in which both teams used a position player on the mound. The Red Sox and Orioles went 17 innings today with 1B Chris Davis pitching 2 innings and getting the win. Davis had a very pitcher-esque day at the plate going 0-8 with 5 k's.

In case you're wondering or you even care, that game in 1925 had Ty Cobb and George Sisler closing out the last game of a doubleheader on the last day of the season for their respective teams.

My great grandfather, Bill Jacobson, batted cleanup for the Browns in that game.

I read this earlier and am still baffled as to how this happened.

Hah! That's totally random and really cool.

I pulled up his Baseball Reference page, looks like he was a really good player (I'm assuming this is him?).

I've been watching the White Sox a bit recently and I've realized that I don't really cheer against them because they are a rival or whatever you want to call them, but because of Hawk and Steve.

Haven't met a lot of Sox fans have you?

I have and they are usually annoying, but most of the Cubs (or a majority of baseball) fans I know are just as annoying.

Cubs fans are just stupid. White Sox fans are aggressively stupid.

There's no sound as beautiful as the silence of Hawk stopping mid sentence when the opposing team hits a walk off against the Sox.

WELL, you see how one pitch can affect a ballgame. Jake Peavy had Crisp struck out back in the 2nd, and didn't get the call, and you see how things snowball from there!

The worst are Brewer fans. At least Sox and Cards fans are vocal regardless, but Brewer fans are as scarce as they come when their team sucks, but when they're good or on a hit streak they crawl out of the wood work to talk [expletive] about the Cubs. They don't seem to care about any team other than us, although I suspect that after last season they may feel the same about the Cardianls.

Basically, if you took an over zealous fan out of a south side bar and put them in the announcers booth the result wouldn't be too far off from Hawk.

Z just threw a three-hit shutout against the Astros.

z is about to throw a shutout against the astros in houston. ah, good ol days

What about against the Astros in Milwaukee?

9K 1 BB 3 H

He has a 1.98 ERA 1.02 WHIP 14/32 BB/K in 41 IP. It would sure be nice to have that in the spot currently inhabited by Chris Volstad.

So maybe we should have tolerated one more year of Z? It sure does suck to pay 15 million dollars to watch Volstad be bad.
