i hope that once they do the new exterior they stop putting up those hideous banners

 

and i don't mean hideous in the sense that OMG SIGNS ON WRIGLEY

 

i mean hideous as in they are ugly as [expletive] and the color really clashes with the wrigley green

Plainly demonstrates how easily they would have swapped in the "CHICAGO BEARS" panels back in the day. Seems that would have been very innovative for its day.

did they replace the entire marquee? that was the best pic i could find

best I can tell, they had two sets of panels. "HICAGO CUBS" and "HICAGO BEARS." (the photos from today show the first "C" was static.)

back in ye olde times the marquee was in prime position to be seen from the streetcar. you get the same effect now from the clark bus. imagine seeing "playing here" and jumping off to buy tix.

I'd imagine the kerning is slightly different based on the number of characters.

they board-ify the standing bear one by making it green with a white outline, but unlike any other two-color version of that logo, the outline also details the inside of the jaw line, making it look like no bear that has ever lived

looks like the facade stuff is, in fact, happening now. the exterior of the park (which really looks dumpy as hell aside from the bleacher area) is going to look so much better soon.
