Cubs Chicago Cubs

#Cubs claimed IF Adrian Cardenas off waivers from the #Athletics. In a corresponding move, IF Blake DeWitt was designated for assignment.

Cardenas hit .314 with 28 doubles, 4 triples, 5 HR, 70 R and 51 RBI in 127 Triple-A games last year while fielding at 2B, SS, 3B and LF.

I don't think Cardenas plays 1B

Thankfully, that doesn't appear to be a pre-requisite to hold the spot for Rizzo.

I like this move alot. I had mentioned in another thread when cardenas was dfa ed by the As that he may be a solid pick up for us. His defense is the question mark but im guessing that theo and company feel good enough about it to put him on the 40 man roster.

I dig the pick up, but while I'm probably alone in this, Im not a huge fan of DFAng DeWitt.

I like Dewitt too...he took alot of crap for being versatile...like him better than Baker tbh for certain reasons, and I think a contender will find him to be a useful role player. I imagine the Yankees will have some interest. That said, not a loss and Cardenas might be able to do alot of the same things anyway.

But why? He was the most difficult Cub for me to watch as a fan, other than the occasional Soriano utter ridiculousness.

I think I said when Cardenas was released that I wasn't all that in love with him. If the brain trust likes him, then I trust them, but the statistical record is meh and the scouts don't love his defense.

I just don't know what I'm supposed to like about him. Fringey defense, average contact, average patience, terrible power.

I'm not sorry to see Dewitt go, but why not just non-tender him rather than sign him to a $1.1 million contract then DFA him. Do we have to pay that?

Nifty little move. Get a bit of upside, maybe save a bit of cash.

Not the type of thing that makes or breaks an organization, but it's nice to see Theo and co. making the correct decisions even on the little things.

We were probably planning on keeping DeWitt around.

I don't know if the Cubs would be responsible for the entire $1.1 mil. I seem to recall Todd Walker only got a portion of his contract when he was DFA'd in spring training one year despite having been offered arb over the offseason.

I just have trouble believing we were planning on keeping him around, then Cardenas changed our minds.

You can pretty much bank that between December and March, the waiver wire will have a couple early 20s middle infielders who can kinda hit but not really and play bad defense.

Just one of those guys I always thought could be decent given a full time chance, especially if 3rd base was avaialble. I'd have personally preferred just trading Baker for whatever we could get.

What do you see in DeWitt? He has always been pretty garbage outside of his rookie season and has been a replacement level player on the Cubs. I get confused with you WSR, you put way too much stock into rookie hot streaks. Even when he was highly thought of his OBP was .339 (the year before he was a top 100 prospect), and .320 (the year he was BA's #82). Plus, he's a lefty who can't hit right handed pitching and a negative defender.

So yeah, what do you like about him?

Probably would get nothing for Baker, since Scutaro got almost nothing and is a better player. Plus, Baker is more useful than DeWitt. He is better than DeWitt at what DeWitt is good at.

Well then we're obviously including DeWitt as the toss in for a Matt Garza to the Tigers trade. You broke the code.

It was a tossup whether he deserved to get tendered a contract in the first place. It doesn't take much to shift the scales from there.

Not sure why we even tendered Dewitt a contract honestly. I guess it all comes full circle, in a way. I would have added Flaherty and cut Dewitt. Now, we add a different utility type without a real position. And Dewitt gets cut. I kind of like Cardenas, but his glove is pretty bad, right? Are we on the hook for Dewitt's 1.1, if he's not claimed?

If it was a big league deal, then we likely are on the hook. Completely forgot about that. I doubt anyone will claim him because if there was any interest we likely would have traded him. Anyone with any interest would likely wait until he's a free agent if he makes it through waivers and get him for cheaper.

We can still trade him after DFAing him. We'd owe him 1/6 of the contract if we outright release him

You have any idea what happens if we throw him in AAA? Does he keep his same contract? Or does he get some sort of minor league split?
