yeah, pretty weak argument.

next argument. New England had 2 TEs in their Hail Mary. A team whose top 3 WRs were outcasts from other bad teams just lost the Super Bowl. And the Giants were afraid to run their 2 min defense out against that team. If New England had a good defense I could see them being in the Super Bowl, but.........

I don't understand your point. No offense. It just doesn't make any sense. Those two TE's Gronk and Hernandez are two of the best in the game. The philosophy over the past two years for the Pats has to run their offense via these TE's they invested in, not WR's.

I think the NFL is a pretty crappy product. Outside of the Bears and Tebow, I have little to no interest in watching a random game unless I'm at a bar. I wouldn't say the same about the other big 4 sports, plus the big 2 of NCAA.

ETA: It's not because Bradshaw should've taken a knee at the 1 though.

I would say you're decidedly in the minority on this one.

Oh is the NFL popular?

Thanks for the heads up

I have a lot of opinions about a lot of guys in the NFL (guys I love, guys I hate), so I have a rooting interest in a lot of games... and yet I still just can't make myself sit down for three and a half hours to watch non-Bears football.

I feel similarly about that, but I don't think it's because the NFL's a crappy product. It's just because I have better things to do than watch non-Panthers games on Sundays.

Let's not say things we can't take back.

I agree. All I kept thinking about was how glad i am that mlb and nba dont have a super bowl. Dont mistake quantity of entertained with quality of entertainment. I like the sport of football but they couch these games in so much bs it ruins the broadcasts for me.

I don't agree with the entire post, but I think the NFL is a crappy product and not bc of whether Bradshaw should take a knee.

It happens to be played on the weekends during the winter, and includes violence and often cheerleaders. It's popularity isn't tied directly to the quality of the product on the field.

I have a hard time making it through an entire NFL game, but that's because I have a really short attention span.

Yeah, I don't watch any sporting event all the way through anymore. It all goes on as background noise. I watch off n' on.

Probably why half the stuff I post on here misses some key point or another. I'm not really paying all that close attention. Kind of embarrassing I guess :)

The only reason to watch an NFL game not involving your team is gambling (fantasy football or real actual gambling). It's not a great product, but it is very entertaining. Every team is basically within 2 or 3 games of each other with a few exceptions.

Also, there is less variety in offensive/defensive systems than there is in college football where a seemingly random terrible game can be entertaining because some team runs a ridiculous option offense or they have 3 corners that are better than everyone else in college football.

Finally, the playoffs are a crapshoot in all sports, but especially in the NFL. The top teams are "rewarded" with a week off, even though that might not always be the best thing for them. If they played 15 games (one versus every team in their conference) and then just went immediately to the Super Bowl, it would be more "fair" but also a lot less entertaining and eternally less lucrative.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I prefer the NFL game to college. I have no connections to any NCAA Division-1 school. I can sit and watch the occasional Badgers game and maybe a marquee game like LSU/Ok State or something, but by and large I couldn't watch something like Marshall vs. Miami of Ohio for more than 5 minutes because I'd get bored very quickly.

Could you watch the Browns vs the Colts this year?

I hate the media (in particular ESPN) overreach with the NFL as much as anyone, but violence and cheerleaders have little to do with the game's popularity.

Well nobody gives a [expletive] about cheerleaders, but how do you claim violence doesn't affect viewership.

If people were that hard up for violence wouldn't they be watching hockey, which is faster and bloodier?

Americans like points and hate Canadians.

Also, everytime the new safety rules are invoked the announcers freak out about how its ruining the game.

Almost nobody grew up playing hockey and almost every american grew up throwing a football around and playing some form of the game.

No cheerleaders.

Seriously, there are guys, esp at the top of the NFL target age, for whom cheerleaders are still a big deal. These guys grew up when naked women were not a simple GIS away.

No cheerleaders aren't the primary reason for the NFL's popularity, but time of the week, time of the year, and violence are very very much so. And cheerleaders fit very nicely with that mix.
