Non guaranteed, split contract. Corpas got the same, by the way. So I guess neither are automatically put on the 40 man, but both get some sort of extra money than a typical NRI.

I like the Corpas deal more now knowing it's a minor league deal. No problem with the Sonnanstine signing either.

Now if we could just nix the Reed signing (or make it non-guaranteed) there wouldn't be any moves Theo had made so far that I didn't like.

Agreed. You can invite anyone you want to spring training. Also, we could just be stocking up on all of this inexpensive flotsam in case we're able to trade some of the current guys assuming they don't mind being spare parts.

I think Theo/Hoyer are trying to put together the worst team possible in 2012 in order to get a great draft pick. Is there a can't miss prospect that will go 1st next year?

Sonnanstine fell off a cliff after 2008. A change of scenery might help him, but this is pretty much a roll of the dice kind of deal for the Cubs.

I can't see anyone complaining about those dice being rolled in Iowa.

Brett over at bleachernation.com says these non-guaranteed split deals still put them on the 40-man roster, which means we are at 39 plus Reed Johnson.

I'm less impressed now.

While I don't like the overcrowding, we have no shortage of guys that can be traded: Garza, Soriano, Zambrano, Byrd, Soto, Russell, Marmol, Baker, DeWitt, and Wells could all be traded. As for younger guys on the 40 man, there arent many guys I could see removed and going unclaimed. Cabrera, Coleman, Maine, Mateo, and Campana could all be claimed. I personally wouldn't miss any of them. Maybe Cabrera. Bianchi could be taken off and I'm sure we could work out a deal with the Royals if we really wanted to keep him.

Side note: did they ever square things away with Samrdzjia? We declined the 3.25 mil option, but he's still on the 40 man. Did the re-sign him yet?

Taking your own advice would serve you well.

Sonnastine and Corpas are currently wasting roster space and unless one of them have a miraculous comeback year, neither one of them make the team likely to win more games next year.

I don't think Theo does things randomly/without consideration of future impacts. Maybe wait a bit, eh?

The only benefit to signing guys like this is havin extra bodies in case someone's traded. Reed would be a useful spare righty outfielder in case we trade Byrd or Soriano, although that Sappelt guy now makes him obsolete. As for Corpas and Sonnenstine we have a plethora of big league ready middle relievers, most of whom the clocks already started ticking on. Maybe someone spelled coffee on Carmine.

I think there's a whole lotta Theo koolaide being passed around.
