I'm pretty excited about the haul we should get for Garza.

They're still the 3rd or 4th best team in their division.

Next year, yeah... but if I were a Nationals fan I'd have good reason to be excited for the future.

Maybe, the Phillies are getting old offensively and are one mound injury away from not being the best team in the NL. The Braves should remain solid, Marlins will improve. But 2012-2013 will include a core of Strasburg, Desmond, Morse, Zimmerman(s), Gio Gonzalez, Storen, Harper, Ramos.... A lot of sick talent on that roster.

If they do jump in on Fielder i think they could win that division.

WSR - I'm not sure about that. If they can solidify the top of the order, wouldn't surprise me if they won the East, but I think they could finish 2nd. It's very, very close btw those top 3 teams.

Wow, fricking wow. I understand some A's fans are disappointed, because they wanted positional assets, but this is a heck of a deal for a pitcher witha glaring concern (walks). I love Cole. I like him better than Jarrod Parker personally (although it's close).

I like this return more than the one the Padres got for Latos (which was good). But they get two ready arms (and much as I'm not as big on Peacock as others, I respect why some folks are high on him) and a quality positional asset. Fricking wow, can't believe they got all three arms and Norris.

Is there a line somewhere where I can bet on the Mets finishing in last in the division?

I think they may end up relegated.

ha ... PCL or IL? or ... Mexico or Japan?

True, but while the Phillies are getting old, they'll probably do what aging big market teams do and go after some top young players and extend some of their younger guys like Hamels and Pence.

As for the Nats, if they did get Fielder, which I don't really see and Morse is for real and Werth gives them what they paid for, add in Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper, and they could really have a winner on their hands.

The key to this trade is how it affects us, as far as I'm concerned. It leaves the Yanks, Red Sox, and Blue Jays ALL still looking for an elite arm. The Tigers could be involved, maybe the Marlins, especially after Gio just went to their division. What pitchers are left out there that compare to Garza? You have Jackson on the FA market, but he's not as good and has baggage to the point where some teams may not trust him. But, he'd only cost money. Jurrjens? Only other guy I can think of currently on the market. Certainly doesn't compare either. Plus, Garza already has a winning pedigree in the AL East. I think it's set up very well for us to get an excellent haul for him.

I'm just not all that enthused with a Red Sox package, although it feels like they could be the most aggressive of the three AL East teams in searching for pitching. There just isn't enough pitching to get back, and they gave some indications that Bogaerts was off-limits in a Gio Gonzalez deal, so hard to buy that he'd be available to us in a Garza deal (there was an Edes article about it)

Just because I think it's an interesting comparison.

Travis Wood has 3.3 WAR over 208.2 IP in his career, with a 3.75 FIP and a 4.30 xFIP (not shocking for a flyball pitcher in GABP). He's under control for 5 more years.

Gio Gonzalez over the last two years has averaged 3.35 WAR in 201.1 IP, with an FIP of 3.71 and xFIP of 3.89. He's under control for 4 more years.

The Nationals just gave up a huge haul of prospects to get their guy. The Cubs gave up one year of an elite setup guy, but will also be receiving two additional prospects.

The Yankees are the team that I really want in the mix, and I can't believe that they're willing to start the season with the rotation they have now.

Nailed it. More Travis Wood, less Reed Johnson plz.

Definitely a better MO than just stacking carcasses on the 40 man roster and hoping that they somehow form a big league baseball team.

I don't see a Red Sox package I'd want either, although it's certainly possible they could be part of a 3 team deal with the Pads, involving Rizzo. The familiarity of the players, plus the friendship of those guys could help make that work obviously.

I still want to deal with K.C. if we can. Maybe the Yankees.

Rumor has it that they aren't willing to part with Myers or Montgomery. Considering Hosmer, Moustakas, Duffy, and Crow are all pretty important MLB pieces for them too, I'm not sure if they'd be cooperative enough.

Yankees are my top choice but KC would be a great partner too. Very nice young offense they have but pitching leaves much to be desired. Their 1 starter is a former top pick that many teams would have given up on by now and their #2 is Bruce Chen. We need to get them in the line and see if they'll start the talks with Wil Myers.

Well they're going to need to get some real pitching sooner than later because how many years to they har before their young core become expensive free agents and they have to start all over again. Tis the life of a small market team.
