He's been signed to be our 4th OF. His lefty mashing abilities may make some sense in the event the front office concedes DeJesus shouldn't face lefties. He's not blocking anybody and he's pretty likely to provide surplus value over whatever paltry amount he ended up signing for.

Not worth getting upset about.

Reed Johnson as a backup CF is probably not good. Reed Johnson as a platoon RF is just bad.

He didn't exactly mash lefties in his bounce back 2011. He's 35 and has mostly stunk in recent years.

Johnson's defense doesn't make him all that appealing a platoon player, especially if he's having to man a corner spot.

I honestly hadn't looked up his numbers before I posted anything. I had just assumed "guy who can only kinda play CF is probably still pretty good in the corners."

Nevermind. Carry on fellas.

His 2011 season is as far as it is possible to go from the approach at the plate I though we were going to be looking for.

I was quite content to have Reed Johnson gone forever.

It's like Epstein/Hoyer are determined to ruin our faith in them and intend to just keep escalating the damage until we crack.

"We've passed on the major free agents, but it's not quite time to trade Castro to the Cardinals. What's something in between that will *really* make them doubt us?"

Signing Reed Johnson on a cheap one year deal really pisses you guys off this much?

It only pisses me off a little because I don't expect him to have much of a role. However, it also causes me to question what I thought I knew about "The Cubs Way".

What's the big effin deal? I know he's not great. Theo knows he's not great. But he's a good bench bat/4th outfielder and that's all he'll be. It's a cheap, one year deal. I personally wouldn't want Campana as our 4th outfielder next year.

What is it that makes you think Johnson will be a better player in 2012 than Campana?

He's not a good fourth outfielder. Epsten/Hoyer should be able to come up with a better fourth outfielder with very minimal effort.

I have more faith in him putting up an OPS north of .750. Campana just strikes me as a poor man's Reggie Willits, but without the walks and worse defense.

Theo's a great shopper. Just think that for a little more money he could have signed Andruw Jones and would have been stuck with a guy who can play all 3 OF positions and actually has a little power.

This is the first of their moves that actually pisses me off.

Ideally, I'd like for our bench to be full of specialists so that we can fully maximize their value. Campana could be around as the pinch runner/defender but we do need guys around who can pinch hit too.

That said, I'd have preferred it if we'd have just protected Ryan Flaherty and used him on the bench. He'd have added a power hitting lefty and his defensive versatility would have allowed us to use Jeff Baker as an OF who can mash lefties.

Isn't he technically a 5th OF, behind Sori, Byrd, Jackson and DeJesus? What's with all the anger?

I don't want bad old baseball players.

I'll be less angry if it's a minor league deal.

No. Jackson is clearly starting the season in AAA. Reed Johnson is our fourth outfielder, and he's bad in that role. It's annoying that we signed a player to fill a role that he's bad at.

The annoyance goes to anger in that he's symbolic of everything we hoped the new regime would do differently from the old one.

I don't believe anything is "clear" until after Spring Training (Hell, Byrd could be traded by then).

Symbolic of everything we hoped the new regime would do differently? Doesn't typing that make you feel just a smidge hyperbolic? It's one freaking signing.

You know when people say things are SOOOO Hendry and are wrong? Like signing a bunch of awesome free agents? Well this actually is SOOOOO Hendry.

But we couldn't protect Flaherty because we needed to hold those spots for guys we were going to bring in the offseason. "Those guys" were not supposed to include Reed [expletive] Johnson

One freaking signing very deep into what has been a very disappointing offseason. Reed Johnson isn't good. His numbers were propped up by luck last year and he's old. He's not the type of player I want around this team anymore. If he's a minor league invite (doubtful), who cares. But I cannot stand wasting a million on garbage like this.
