While I do believe in God, I've never been a very religious person, but like those who put all of their faith in their respective God, I'm going to do my best to put all of my trust in Theo and assume that while I might not understand what is happening or why it is, everything happens for a reason and he has our greater good in mind no matter how senseless it may seem at the time.

Really starting to get discouraged about 2012. Trying to be patient, but I'm losing that battle.

Most of have long since discounted 2012, welcome to the club. My hopes for 2013 are well eroded at this point, as well.

The new guys don't know Campana.

Who the F cares who they "know"? That's something Dusty Baker would have said while giving a crappy veteran 500 PA to show what he can do in front of Dusty's eyes. You don't need to know the players.

I'm just repeating what Levine said in his chat yesterday about Campana. Signing Reed isn't going to kill this team, in any way. Now, if the money is higher than I mentioned, I'd get pissy too and I'd certainly prefer if he was given less. I said 1.5 because I figure they'd give him a raise over the 900,000 he made last year.

It's over.

At least we're going to waste it with guys like this. If we aren't trying to win, might as well let Brett Jackson get some work in AAA and not use up his service time.

Meh. If he's blocking Jackson for one year its not the end of the world (save Jackson's ML service time for his prime years?). Based on this and the apparent "Marshall Plan" it looks like we are punting 2012. I'm fine with that so long as we are getting potential impact prospects and/or hoarding cash as a result. The one good thing that this could signify is that they plan on Jackson starting in center and they want a spare righty OF with both Jackson and DeJesus as everyday guys and either Byrd or Soriano is going to be delt. Edited by Little Slide Rooter

I'd rather have had Crisp. Better defense, good baserunning/speed. Regress Reed's .394 BAbip and their bats aren't a lot different either.

My guess is we'll give him a major league deal this time. Maybe 1.5ish or so. Nothing to get worked up over.

That sure as [expletive] is something to get worked up over.

Why? The new guys don't know Campana. Reed is a decent backup OFer. It's doubtful we'll have both Soriano and Byrd by spring training and they've already said Brett is starting the year in AAA.

But how do they know Reed Johnson? After all he wasn't in the Boston or San Diego system last year, and those are clearly the only players they could know anything about.

This is the exact same fritter away a million here, a million there idiocy that Hendry was the worst at.

Levine said yesterday they know nothing about Campana, other than he's fast. I'd certainly think FO's know much more about MLB players who've been around a while than mid round draft picks that have just made it up. Yes, this is frittering away a little cash, if they give him 1.5. I'd much rather spend it differently. But, it's not like Hendry, because he'd give him a 2 year 4 or 5 mill deal. Plus, the number I attached may be wrong as it is. Hopefully it's less. But, it's 600,000 more than what he'd make on a minor league deal. It's enough to sign a decent IFA guy possibly, but other than that, I'm not sure it's going to make that much of a difference. Now, if they go out and sign 3 or 4 more guys like this, I'll be pissed.

Did Jed think that Johnson was a switch hitter like DeJesus or something? Leaving aside the Reed Johnson portion of adding him, it's another right handed OF that should probably only be playing CF. It doesn't make sense.

Does this mean no Coco Crisp? I think I'd rather have Coco.

CoCo likely wants more than a year, no?

Yeah, but I wouldn't sign him for more than a year. I'd rather have neither.

1. Cheaper Fukudome

2. Theo's House

3. Guy who couldn't hit enough to stick in Colorado

4. McDonald's

5. Reed Johnson

Best offseason *evah*.

And that's even before we dump Garza.

this is pretty disheartening.

all of this would be so much easier to swallow if you knew we were about to go drop a bunch of cash on the draft and ifa signings. as it stands, everything that's happened so far has just fed the fires of that little voice in your head that said "it's nice that he knows what vorp is, but theo was handed a really good team in boston and given all the money in the world to spend and these last couple offseasons didn't look great unless you assume lucchino was forcing him to do things."

oh well.

He's been signed to be our 4th OF. His lefty mashing abilities may make some sense in the event the front office concedes DeJesus shouldn't face lefties. He's not blocking anybody and he's pretty likely to provide surplus value over whatever paltry amount he ended up signing for.

Not worth getting upset about.

Johnson's defense doesn't make him all that appealing a platoon player, especially if he's having to man a corner spot.
