Can't blame him with St. Louis and Milwaukee getting weaker.

If we miss on Darvish, but get Prince, is adding Edwin Jackson the best thing for us to do at that point? Or is trading Garza a better option? Because I just don't see us able to put together a package to add an elite SP right now.

Definitely depends on what we could get for Garza. I think we have to trade with Texas at this point for Olt and Perez. Apparently Rizzo is already available, and will most likely be flipped to the Rays.

I know our FO is overhauled, but this off season is making me irrationally depressed.

If we included Castro in a deal, yes.

If we're just talking about guys in our system, no. I'd put Grandal and Alonso ahead of Brett Jackson.

Thanks. That's kind of what I figured, but wasn't sure exactly how highly thought of Grandal and Boxerman are. And for the record, I wasn't intending to include Castro - he's probably the most valuable player in that deal.

Boxberger will probably get a shot at their closer's job this year at some point. It'll be interesting to see whether they flip Rizzo or Alonso though. They'll probably say all the right things about keeping both, but I just don't see any chance they're both on their roster come opening day.

Alonso can't be any worse than Blanks in LF. I think they move Guzman and Blanks and keep Alonso, though flipping Alonso might be beneficial while his perceived value is high

Boxberger's numbers last year were sick. If the Reds weren't just selling high on him, meaning he truly is that good, the Padres did very, very well in this deal.

I don't know how bad Blanks is in LF, but Alonso is terrible in the OF.

And quite possibly the Cubs.

How good is Latos? Jesus that is a haul!!

I have not seen Latos pitch much, but have seen the numbers are pretty incredible. How much of that is the ball park that he pitched in though?

I really want to trade Garza after seeing this. And I love Garza.

He's done more work on the road (nearly 60 more IP on the road) and his ERA away from Petco is a cozy 3.57. He's pretty legit.

I know Alonso isn't a small guy (6'2" 240 lbs), but Blanks is a 6'6" 270 pound behemoth. He has that "more athletic than you think" appeal but he shouldn't be out there. Also I think that 270 lbs listing is very conservative. If I had to bet between Alonso or Blanks becoming a better defensive LF over the years, I'd probably take Alonso 10 times out of 10, mostly because Blanks will probably get injured more often out there due to his size and putting all that pressure on his legs

Agreed. Blanks is horrible in the field.

Blank's bat is pretty great though. His power is off the charts, but all he can really play is 1B. If we nabbed him it would need to be a bench role since I honestly don't see the Cubs trotting him out as the starting 1B given his injury history and lack of MLB service time. Committing to him to be a starter is risky, but his bat can play at the MLB level, but only if he's getting regular AB's, IMO. His talents are wasted as a bench player, but you can only play him in one spot which happens to be of dire importance for the Cubs now. I'd love to have him, but he's not really a fit. If we miss out on all the 1B options, I wouldn't have a problem settling on him and giving him a chance, but that's like the absolute last ditch effort. And even then I'm not so sure how much better he'd be than Lahair. His bat is leaps and bounds better but his ability to stay on the field limits his appeal

Josh Byrnes on conference call, says the #Padres do not expect to look at Alonso in LF. He's a first base candidate for SD

At this point I would be shocked if the Cubs didn't trade for Rizzo. He was drafted by the Red Sox then Hoyer traded for him in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. He would be the perfect young, left handed power hitting first baseman this team needs.

I'm sure Jocketty is afraid of our 70 win juggernaut. Didn't Latos have decreased velocity last year after having a big innings jump in 2009? Overall, he seems like a perfect candidate to get Dusty'd.

Reds were also pretty unlucky last year. Their Pythag was 83-79; they went 79-83. Couple some regression with the Latos trade and the weakening of the Cardinals, Brewers, and (so far) the Cubs, and I'd think the Reds are a solid bet to be an 87+ win club next year.

With the Brewers, Cards, and Cubs (possibly) all weaker and the Pirates and Astros playing as usual, the Reds should have an easy time in the NL Central. That's why I'm hoping our FO hasn't kissed off 2012 while looking long term. The Reds are good, but they still have Dusty.

Yeah, that's just ridiculous.

Exactly. I was referring to the teams that finished ahead of the Reds.

Can somebody look and see what Dusty's typical pythag vs. actual record is season by season for his career? I'd be interested to see if his stupidity has an affect on that in any way.
