Doesn't this move create a significant logjam at first? Or maybe Alonso will be their starting LF? Didn't see this coming, but the Reds just became an easy favorite for the division.

Hmm. What an odd trade, there has to be at least one more guy.

Nevermind

#Padres acquire RHPs Edinson Volquez & Brad Boxberger, INF Yonder Alonso and C Yasmani Grandal from #Reds for RHP Mat Latos

Sick trade for the Padres.

They already have Guzman and Rizzo at 1B, he's gotta be taking over for Blanks. Blanks has no business being in LF and he was only put there because of Adrian Gonzalez. He's a 1B by nature, and his injury woes have probably been due to his weight (leg/foot injuries popping up ever since he's been playing outfield). He can't handle a OF workload. I'd be interested in Blanks has a bench/backup 1B option, or even as a last ditch starter option if we can't find anyone. He's probably not the best fielder, but neither is Fielder and Blanks needs regular AB's to get his swing back, cause when he's on he's dangerous and can hit the ball a mile.

Or there's Seth Smith, who will apparently be traded now, but he'd be much more expensive I'm sure.

that's a pretty damn good haul, and I'm not high on Alonso at all

My thoughts exactly. I love Grandal though.

Of course, this deal does make the Reds better too. They've still got Votto and Mesoraco at 1B and C.

Holy crap. Trade Garza for a little less than that, please.

Looks like Latos hits arby #1 in 2012 and again the next year. If they don't lock him up, he'll get expensive quickly.

If we don't get either Prince or Darvish, Garza is absolutely getting traded this year if this is what these guys can command.

Was just thinking about this myself. Jeff Passan offers the same question:

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan Close

Can't wait to see what teams with starting pitching ask in return now. If Latos can get that, what would Gio/Danks/Garza/Jurrjens/etc. get?

I wonder if we could flip Garza to the Padres for Rizzo? Or is that not sexy enough for you guys? This is just idle speculation because I have no idea what else in their system, and it might not be pretty.

Yeah, that's a great haul. If the Cubs aren't contending this year, I'd love to see them turn Garza around for a similar package. On the flip side, it'll make acquiring pitching (a la Gio Gonzalez) tougher if this is the market.

I'd personally want a lot more for Garza than just Rizzo.

I'm not huge on Rizzo, honestly. There'd have to be another piece of similar value and a couple others before I'd entertain the thought of trading Garza.

Would we even be able to match that type of deal?

Would you rather build a deal around Rizzo or Blanks? Or neither?

If we miss on Fielder, Rizzo becomes one of my favorite options available. And if we miss on Fielder AND Darvish, then I hope this return gives us reason to flip Garza, who I think is slightly better than Latos(albeit a tad older), but probably has slightly less value, because it's 4 years versus 2 for Garza under team control, along with the money factor as well.

Hell, I wouldn't mind finding a way to get Volquez, to be honest. He's still got upside himself. But Garza isn't a guy the Pads would be wanting. Not sure what kind of package we could offer for Rizzo and Volquez that makes sense for them. Although part of me thinks Rizzo could immediately be on his way to Tampa, involving Davis.

If we included Castro in a deal, yes.

If we're just talking about guys in our system, no. I'd put Grandal and Alonso ahead of Brett Jackson.

Personally, I wouldn't put Alonso ahead of Brett, but Grandal would be right there with him. The point though, os with this trade, I don't see how we can put a package together for Gio, without sending PTBNL's, including Baez.
