Not saying I am thrilled to have an outfield of Soriano, Byrd and DeJesus, but I have faith Theo/Co. are putting their puzzle together and not randomly giving out contracts like our old regime. (2 year extension for Grabow at 7.5 mill).

i think it says a lot that you claim to be an evangelist but you have chosen to put your faith in theo instead of da jesus

"He's player who's very versatile. We can work him in a lot of different spots in the lineup," Hoyer said. "Our priority was to get more balance in our lineup from the left side, and David being a switch-hitter helps us in that area."

the updated espn article has the word "switch" taken out. it just says hitter.

why do some people think dejesus is like marlon byrd?

Probably because:

- he's a OF who can play all three spots (but isn't the best CF out there)

- who doesn't have much power

- around the same age

- offensive value is heavily tied to batting average

I don't like this move, but at the same time I don't dislike it. On one hand I think the money could be better spent elsewhere other than a marginally better Marlon Byrd, but on the other hand he could be a solid addition if we do end up trading one or both of Byrd/Soriano.

I'm interested to see the ensuing moves to see how DeJesus fits in to the overall picture. That will probably determine whether I think it's a good move or an unnecessary one.

i don't know., the disparity between the walk rate of the 2 players just makes it hard for me to consider them alike.

Like it. It reminds me of the Desrosa signing (or was it a trade). A down year, but generally good #'s for the carreer. Patient batter, good defender, hits alot of doubles. He's not a typical HR guy in RF. But I think he'll put up respectable #'s in RF and play great defense.

I think this is the first of many great moves to get the Cubs quality guys to compete right away. I feel they are probably genuinely interested in Fielder. I think if you let Brett man CF, trade Soriano and get another buy low guy at LF with great defense. That shores up your defense in the outfield. Then sign Fielder giving you that big bat in the line-up. Use some trading chips to get a quality 3B and starting pitcher. You've got a radically different team from last year, and one I think I can enjoy watching next year.

the opposite was true of derosa. coming off a career year, which he basically duplicated

Ah I see. So that was one case where Hendry's tendancy to sign everyone coming off a career year actually worked out. I seem to remember some people here weren't too high on him (didn't expect a repeat). But Derosa changed minds around here quickly, I think Dejesus could do the same thing.

By the way did you know we have 2 Dejesus's on the team now? Starlin's middle name is Dejesus, according to BR atleast.

Judging by the walk rate, power, and left handedness seems more like Kosuke than Byrd.

I think it's a great move and probably will be followed by trading either Soriano or Byrd. Let's not forget that everybody wants Jackson to be the everyday CF, but he's not an absolute "sure thing".

Is Reed Johnson for sure gone? He'd be a nice platoon partner with DeJesus.

I think Marlon may start the year with the team to give Brett some more time in the minors. Then they trade him to a desperate team with an injured outfield to make room for Brett sometime in June or July. They're certainly shopping Soriano and would love to unload him with eating as minimal amount of money as possibly, but I don't see a deal getting done this offseason.

It's not an astronomical difference or anything. The IsoD is 72/58. The BB/PA is 8.3%/6.6%. Dejesus isn't Fukudome and Byrd isn't Soriano. Byrd has a tick more power and a little less patience. I think the similarities are pretty valid.

Fukudome a IsoD of 101 and a BB/PA at 13.4%. Dejesus is much closer to Byrd than he is to Fukudome.

Assuming Soriano is moved, Jonny Gomes is a nice cheap righty platoon candidate. He crushes left hand hitting. Utterly useless against right hand pitching, though. Edited by Elrhino

This is what I'm hoping for. Unless you can get a fantastic deal for Byrd, it makes sense to keep him. It's the best business move to at least keep Jackson in the minors until the middle of April, and it might be prudent to keep him there until June. He's probably not going to wildly outproduce Byrd and with a player like Jackson the more team control/cost controlled years you can get the better. If they find a taker for Soriano, it become a whole different equation and they might need to bring Jackson up at that point.
