DeJesus is a type B FA. That still matters this offseason, right? I keep confusing which aspects of the CBA take effect immediately.

Well, it doesn't matter for us.

I guess this shows that the regime expects to contend in the next 1-2 years, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered with signing DeJesus. Maybe this points to the Cubs putting in a real offer on Pujols/Fielder.

It was pretty clear a long time ago that they would try and contend the next couple years, and I don't think this signing shows anything else in that regard.

The major league OF was Soriano, Byrd, Colvin, all impatient hitters, some of them extremely so. They needed help out there and they filled it without giving up any other assets and spending a small amount of money for a guy who stands a reasonable chance of outperforming that contract.

He'll make $4.25 million each of the next two years while the $6.5 million option includes a $1.5 million buyout. While DeJesus figures to serve as the starting right fielder next season, the Cubs could have more flexibility if they find a taker for Alfonso Soriano. The 31-year-old is coming off a down season, but has a .284/.356/.421 career batting line and is regarded as a skilled and versatile defender. The lefty-hitter should benefit from a fantasy perspective by leaving O.co Coliseum behind. It's a nice buy-low signing by the Cubs' new front office.

I'd actually like to see Soriano stay and platoon with Dejesus.

Last year Soriano was at: 271 .312 .500 .812 against LHP.

Dejesus has a similar career OPS against RHP: .292 .368 .447 .815

It's a lot of money to be playing for the small part of the platoon but if the other option is to move him and eat most of the costs then I'd rather capitalize on what he still does well.

I'm not completely against the idea or anything but I don't see it happening. Soriano cried about not batting 5th everyday, I can't imagine him taking to a platoon.

I know for a fact that David Dejesus' personal hitting coach is in Chicago. I know this because I used to go to him. So he's obviously very familiar with the area and came at a slightly discounted price thanks to his bad 2011 season.

I like the move for the most part.

DD lives in Wheaton in the off-season. Probably helped on negotiating terms.

Who is David TheTebow?

Seems like a prototypical Epstein like move on the surface. Probably underrated because of his good defense and decent patience plus coming off a down year that I'm sure someone will tell me is because of an unlucky BABIP or LD% or something.

He's not someone that's gonna make me rush out and buy tickets next season, but I think its a solid signing representative of some of the moves Epstein made in Boston. Some of them worked very well and some of them did not (Lugo, Cameron).

I'm not sure it's possible to look better as a human being than she does in that picture

Did you look at some of the other pictures?

You're probably right. I'm anxious to see how this unfolds.

From Bruce

#Cubs GM Hoyer says DeJesus "does a lot of things very well": hits RHP, plays RF well, runs bases well, doesn't strike out a lot.

#Cubs GM Hoyer says he's still talking with agent Pat Rooney about bringing Kerry Wood back for 2012.

Hoyer says he does not see DeJesus as a platoon player. #Cubs

This move would seem to indicate that Colvin is gone and possibly one of Byrd/Soriano. BJackson seems like a Epstein type of guy (good patience, good fielder etc) so I'd think he has a spot.

edit: or I suppose, Jackson could be trade bait.
