someone explain to me how this contract is going to work, because in my head, if this is 3/27, we're paying him 9 million a year to play in the minor leagues the next two seasons. that can't be right, can it?

Go to page 3, it's talked about on there.

@Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein

Folks, the four year deal for Soler is DIFFERENT from the Cespedes deal. Service time won't start until big leagues, NOT a FA after the 4.

excellent, i missed that.

(as long as that really means he's not getting 18 million dollars to play in the minors the next two years)

Without a trade of Garza, I really hope there's a pitcher that's a clear cut choice for us to take at 6th in the draft. In fact, it wouldn't bother me one bit if we used all 4 of our top 70 picks on pitching now.

I'm just dreaming about the ceilings of Candelerio, Soler, Castro, Jackson, Baez, Rizzo all coming to fruition and how awesome that'd be.

So I guess that guy Joeby from PSD might've been right when he said this happened a few weeks ago.

that comp by Parks means more in my opinion because I feel like he tends to downplay prospects to backlash against the always uppity descriptions of others (Rangers' prospects not included, of course). and if he is saying Upton, well, that's damn fantastic

Over on PSD, some dude said a scout was on The Score and mentioned his upside as Justin Upton.......

That was me. I've been listening to the score since I heard. I really wish I could say who it was, I don't think he was one of the well known scouts or anything but it was still interesting to hear.

I really hope this is front-loaded. Soler will almost certainly be in a Samardzija '12 situation where his contract expires prior to being arb-eligibile. That being the case, his salary his first year after the contract expires (be it '15 or '16) will be set by the Cubs with the caveat that it can't be less than 80% the previous year's salary or 70% his salary the year prior.

So assuming it's 4/27.5 you do something like 13/9/2.9/2.6

Now obviously, his agent isn't an idiot, so he'll understand why the contract is being structured in such a way, but hopefully this is part of the reason he's getting as much as he is in AAV

that was my thought as well. if it's weighted evenly and let's say it's 4/$27.5, he'll be making about $7m in 2015 in what i think will be his age 22 season. even if you knock it down by 20%, he'd still have to be at least a decent major league ballplayer or very much on the cusp of becoming one to keep him in arbitration.

The 2012 top 10 is very pitching heavy. Go to this link then click "top 50 draft"

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/

MLB's rank 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are all pitchers. Likely top available pitcher when Cubs come up is Kevin Gausmen, who is ranked #6. Possibly if teams ahead of the Cubs target offense maybe #4 pick Lance Mccullers who is also a pitcher might be available.

I agree with you, especially if the Cubs can't net Turner+ for Garza. Luckily there are some good SP candidates in the top 10 this year.

It's way premature to start saying who the likely top available pitcher will be at the #6 pick. There is always a lot of movement in the amateur draft, especially when there isn't much top end talent, as seems to be the case in 2012. Danny Hultzen wasn't regarded as a guy who would go in the top half of last year's draft, and ended up going #2 overall in a loaded draft. Sonny Gray dropped from a likely top 5 pick to #18. Matt Purke fell to the 3rd round due to injury concerns. Daniel Norris and Jack Armstrong also fell a lot.

Considering that our system was middle of the pack entering the offseason, with the additions of Soler, Rizzo, Concpcion, and Torryes, we'd have to be at least closing in on top 10 by now, right?
you don't even bother reading any threads you post in anymore do you?

Apparently I missed the part where that question was answered. Do enlighten me.

He wouldn't have time to make 50 posts per day if he let little things like reading threads get in his way.

At this time, Lance McCuller's stock has fallen a lot since there are questions if he can start. He's not a top 4 prospect.

Don't worry, you'll be back to that level as soon as the season starts and you become enraged over every play that doesn't go the Cubs way.

Of course it's not done done. He's not even officially a free agent. Besides, everything on at least the last page of that thread suggest that it is all but a done deal, hopefully meaning that as soon as he's granted free agency all that's left to do is sign the contract.

I'm always guarded over these things until the contract's signed, but when the perennially cynical Kevin Goldstein is as confident about something as he is about this, I'll take to mean that an agreement is in place.
