The latest baseball trade rumor from Bleacher Report has the Cubs looking at first baseman James Loney of the LA Dodgers. Los Angeles just resigned Matt Kemp to a big contract and for a team scrambling to find a new owner, that deal could mean that players like Loney will move this winter before they are owed big money contracts.

The Dodgers first baseman is just 27 and though he has limited power, his .320 average after the All-Star break is much more consistent than Carlos Pena was for Chicago last year. Loney is also an excellent fielder and a deal would make the Cubs better in 2012.

Thankfully, it's just a rumor. Of course, his one shining moment was against us.

Loney is a guy probably capable of something like a .275/.800 with 15-20 HR in Wrigley. If he was a center fielder, a 2nd baseman, or even a 3rd baseman, we'd probably be all over him. As a 1st baseman, he won't be able to produce nearly enough power and it's not like we make up for it somehwere else. Now if Pujols or Fielder were completely out of the question, I guess I'd be OK taking a chance on a 1 year commitmant for Loney as long as we don't give up too much, and I'm talking minimal rather than a multi year deal for Pena or Kotchman.

I guess that what it comes down to for me when it comes to my propblem with trading for Loney isn't as much Loney himself but more so the fact that it would pretty much be the end of any Pujols/Fielder hopes.

If I wanted to get an article up on Bleacher Report saying the Cubs were interested in Fibber McGee, how long would it take? 15 minutes?

That's probably about right. As a bonus, your post would show up at the top of search engines for entries like Cubs offseason and you would get somewhere around 20,000 reads.

I keep confusing Bleacher Report and Bleacher Nation. Just so I'm on board, Report=bad, Nation=good?

I don't know about Bleacher Nation, but at one point Bleacher Report was set up to where anyone could sign up to write about sports. I think they have started to monitor their authors a little more, but I'm not sure about that. That concept seems fine, but it opens up the stage for some pretty poor writing, in my opinion.

As for speculation like Loney to the Cubs, that stuff gets all kinds of hits, but they're not generally written by those who'd be in position to actually hear such a rumor.

Just went to Nation- looks good. Can't believe I hadn't stumbled across it before.

Molly as a PTBNL?

Jayson Stark: According to STats Inc this would be the first ever occurence of a husband and wife being traded for one another.

Ace should really, really consider re-naming his blog.
