I think it's a decent hire. Because there's no track record to go on, nobody can say if it's a good or bad hire yet. I think it has the potential to be good. Matheny (like Alomar) is a player that was always talked about as being managerial material.

I think this has almost no influence on the Pujols signing. If the coaching staff stays largely intact I think it's a plus. But as stated before, it's going to come down to money and the other offers he gets. If the Marlins, Washington, Toronto etc. find an extra 250 million laying around then it doesn't matter who manages any team.

Or, you know, the Cubs.

Only they don't have to find it laying around. It's there.

I can definitely say it's a bad hire.

Sportscenter just played soundbites from Matheny's introduction interview over a highlight video in which one of the clips is him sliding into 2nd and being out as part of a double play. Great work ESPN.

Shhhh, cardinal fans are busy pretending like we don't have any money. The Limestone Cubs can't afford to pay Albert big money.

That's pretty much a career highlight.

Yep the alternative was a montage of blocked sliders in the dirt.

because it's a warm-up pitch between innings

In a Spring Training game.

Unless the manager is a La Russ-ian tyrant who demands that Skip Schumaker and Ryan Theriot make up the middle infield, managers are an afterthought. I neither love nor hate the hiring; I nothing it.

Kinda like the hiring of Sveum.

The Cubs were part of my "etc".

That said, I highly doubt that they're planning to spending that much on one player over the age of 30. They have enough of that already (Soriano). As Cubs fans, you should be happy that the focus seems to be on building through the draft & farm system. Everything I'm seeing is that Team Theo is looking at 2013 and beyond. Pujols doesn't fit that model.

If the Cubs sign a really good free agent, they don't get any more draft picks for the next five years. True story.

Also Pujols has only been given a year to live.

The Cardinals have plenty of corpses for Theriot to ride. I'll take Albert, thanks.

The most prolific corpse-producing team in the majors.

I'm a little disheartened that Albert would only be of use to the Cubs in 2012, though. He must have a "use by" date stamped on him somewhere.

No, but he starts getting moldy in 2016.
