I'm not arguing senility, I'm arguing naivety (or his being sheltered from the situation).

Going back to the possible NCAA involvement, anything that might happen won't (can't?) happen until Sandusky is actually tried and found guilty. That looks like it's 100% going to happen, but as long as (legally) everything is just "alleged", there isn't much the NCAA can (or should) do

So if Sandusky offs himself tomorrow, the NCAA can never act on this? You're conflating both what the NCAA can do versus a school, and the repercussions for NCAA violations versus legal/moral violations. This isn't Jim O' Brien at Ohio State.

I'm wondering if the NCAA, in good faith, sanction a school for crimes that haven't been proven. Seems like a slippery slope if you're going to start doing that

Sure they've been proven. The grand jury report is right there.

Sandusky doesn't have to be guilty in order for Paterno or the Athletic Department to have fault. They've already testified enough to show they were negligent(if not criminally, then morally) in reporting the problem to the authorities.

This is easily the worst scandal in college football history and it all happened under Joe's watch. I have no idea how people can pretend he didn't know.

When people accuse Paterno of being to senile to do any type of coaching, it's always "No, he's still sharp! He has a ton of input on the team", of course when a sexual abuse scandal comes along "Leave him alone, he's old, confused, he couldn't have known!"

Peterno confirmed via statement

"at this moment the board of trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status"

what a complete ass. first he tells his bosses they can't fire him. now after it's revealed he was complicit in allowing a pedophile to pray on children he tells his bosses to not even think of firing him

And it contains not only accusations but eyewitness accounts. The did it happen/not happen ship sailed a long time ago.

And I'm not sure any sanctions that the NCAA would likely lay down would be half as damaging to the Penn State football program than the scandal it self will prove to be. Even if everyone even loosely associated with this thing were to be cleared out, right or wrong, the first thing people will think of when they hear "Penn State football" will be boys being raped. It's going to be that way for a long time.

If they foolishly allow Paterno and the staff to stick around yeah, it absolutely will be that way for a long time. If they finally made the right decision and moved forward with new people who are not incompetent rape enablers and apologists, it could probably go away sooner.

It'll go away sooner if they clean house, sure. But it will linger for a while after even if they do.

I did not know that Sandusky has 6 adopted children.

He's the cliched case of a predatory pedophile who spent his entire life putting himself in situations to be surrounded by children.

I get mocked sometimes by other parents because of my Free Range Kids support. I don't worry about some random stranger snatching my kid off the street for nefarious purposes.

But this is exactly the kind of situation I do want to prepare my kid for. Unlike child-snatching, this is a real and (relatively) common danger. People who want to prey on children don't usually snatch them into the back of a van. They put themselves in a situation to be in authority over children and abuse that authority, usually while finding a complicit support structure of enablers who choose not to believe what should be obvious about their friend/colleague.

Penn State football and Joe Paterno are very public entities. The more consequences they face, the more the public gets the message that it is everyone's responsibility to watch out for and prevent these situations.

I still can't get over the balls on this guy with the statement
At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status.
. Who the [expletive] does he think he is? (besides a pedophile enabler?)

He's a man who donated a lot of money to Special Olympics. Don't you know how much leeway that gives him?

He is Penn State football, and to an extent, Penn State itself. He is the ultimate decider of everything that happens.

But he's a naive old man who is too confused to understand what rape is because that sort of thing never happened when he grew up.

HE THINKS HE'S GOD BECAUSE THAT'S HOW EVERYONE IN THAT TOWN AND FAN BASE HAS TREATED HIM FOR 45 YEARS.

College football, in some cultures, = religion. For idiot townies like PSU fans, Alabama fans, Texas, insert die hard college football fan base here, their football team may as well be the Catholic Church and their coach may as well be the Pope. Unfortunately for that monster Sandusky, he won't be transferred to Rome or the next parish.

Well that's just sad if the Board is going to allow themselves to get pushed around by this old coot. The NCAA needs to step in and ban all those involved from the football program effective immediately. But since this doesn't involve trading a tattoo for some memorabilia, I wonder if they even care?

it's funny to read people talking about how he's seen in State College when they've never lived in State College.

by most accounts, the folks in SC are outraged at all of this

That's a fair point. I assume most people in the area are reasonably decent people and the spontaneous support riot was just college kids being stupid.
