No, I'm not the one with a change in behavior to consider here.

Yeah you are. I think I speak for all of us that this off season has been crap. Anyone disagree?

So, bad at reading, then.

Fair enough. Enlighten us.

There are many people on here who are borderline ecstatic with this offseason. You have obviously spent no time reading about any of our additions to both the major league team and the farm, and presumably even less time evaluating the cost of some of the guys who "got away." There was unprecedented stupid money flying around all offseason, and our guys decided to invest in the future rather than take expensive risks. You can hate that we have resigned to not compete next year, but for the love of God, stop throwing around the pro-Hendry hyperbole [expletive]. It's so tired.

Speaking of making hacky, obnoxious posts on a message board - maybe you should find a new hobby.

No he's not.

What is it about the Marlins making a low ball offer that makes our off season worse?

If people are borderline ecstatic with this offseason it's only because Hendry is no longer in charge. The offseason isn't over yet, but it has not been a good one. I understand the strategy and the deep hole they are in though. I also don't really care for the "small market" mentality that Hoyer has been talking about, but I'm on board for the next couple of years.

Count me as borderline ecstatic. We've upgraded the farm, added extra picks for the upcoming draft, traded for upside types that could turn into much more and will go into next year with Soriano as the only "bad" money we've got. Saved money off major league team, put it in other areas that were needed and still probably will win more games than last year's squad. In my opinion. This franchise is in MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better shape than it was before Theo was hired.

You can be disappointed the Cubs are opting to rebuild instead of go for the quick fix but that doesn't make it a bad offseason. The front office has a good plan and they're executing it almost flawlessly.

Yea, that.

Love the Marshall trade. Love the Rizzo trade. The DeJesus deal was a great value despite it seeming insignificant. Pretty much have been happy with everything we've done this offseason, short of signing Reed Johnson for some god forsaken reason.

With the exceptions of Rizzo and maybe the Marshall trade, there's really nothing to love, but the overall direction is something to love. On the surface, it may look as though no big moves were made, when in reality putting together the front office that he did was bigger than any 100+mil free agent we could have signed. As for Cespedes, judging by the deal we gave Concepcion, I can't imagine us not going well above the Marlins 6/40 offer, though I think that some others might as well.

Count me in as loving the direction we are taking. I also like several of the moves the Cubs have made, but I am still disappointed that we could not sign a couple of veterans on short term contracts to at least field a competitive team out there, as long as those veterans were not blocking someone more deserving. As I've said here many times before, ideally you sign them and then ship them out in July. It's almost like you are buying prospects and getting a half year of a decent player as well.

This off season has been a big bowl of juicy cherries. Add to that one of Soler/Cespesdes, and I believe a new bowl is on its way to my table.

We're going to head into 2013(current roster) with around 76 mill committed. Counting projected arb raises for Soto, Castro, Stewart, Garza, Wood, Volstad, and Russell. In this case, we'd need a 2B, an OF with power, and a pair of frontline pitchers. One pitcher could be traded for and we'd probably need to find a FA. If this gets done and we add Cespedes, 2B could work with Barney and/or Cardenas. But, looking things over, I definitely think we'll be in contention next year. In fact, it probably makes more sense for us to keep Garza, and I've been advocating dealing him more than anyone probably.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "there was a lot of talk late in the week" about the Orioles being a "sleeper team" for Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Cafardo notes that the O's are "very aggressive in their pursuit of foreign-born players." Baltimore has been mentioned for a while as a possible suitor for Cespedes, with the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox and Tigers also in the running. The Marlins have already hosted him on a visit and reportedly have offered him a contract in the vicinity of $40 million. They're considered by most to be the favorites to land the 26-year-old.

young, cheap and bad with the chance of getting better > old, expensive and going nowhere without catching lightning in a bottle.

I still think we need a lot to go right (and keep Garza) to have a chance at contending next year. We'll also be relying on the other teams in the division not improving that much as well. We need the right players at the right positions at the right price to all come available, plus we need multiple guys on our own team to develop well to take a big jump next year. Not that this can't happen, I just think contention next year is pretty unlikely unless everything works out just right.

That said, I still think this has been a very good offseason. My enthusiasm is still lessened because I don't like that they're making no effort to contend for at least a year, but I think the moves themselves have been excellent in moving in the direction the front office wants to. Ultimately, I'm just happy we have a front office that sets a philosophy and follows it consistently. Even though I disagree with the scale of the rebuilding process, I'm still glad we at least have a philosophy and will follow it. That makes us a far better organization than we were under Hendry and I'm excited about that.

CC is clearly a nowacrat.

If we miss out on Cespedes, I do think that we should gamble on Castillo and try to shop Soto or even Marmol for a corner outfield type. I wonder if we could get BJ Upton or one of the two plus a few more pieces, maybe Marlon Byrd.

Soto might get you something, but I'm not sure Marmol will get much in return because we would be selling low.

I really don't get the love for BJ Upton when our best prospect is a CFer and Upton's only real value is his defensive ability as a CFer. Until Jackson can show his bat can play at a corner, we should probably stay out of the market for a defense-first CFer.
