Wait, is he 26 or 27?

According to Wikipedia, his birthday is October 10th, 1985. So, he's 26.

Doesn't the fact that a local paper could make a mistake like that make you just a tiny bit nervous? I'm not saying I affirmatively doubt his age. But, well, I don't like to see a publication "mistakenly" up his age a year. It just unsettles me, ever so slightly.

That said, I trust that Theo, Jed, et al, will not sign a guy that they have legitimate concerns about. I trust that they'll do their homework very thoroughly.

If not for the group we have now, I'd probably be terrified about Cespedes' being older than what is being claimed. Even now, I am still cautious, but certainly think our guys have done alll that's possible to find out as much about him as there is to find out.

So is the worry that Cespedes is actually 27 instead of 26, or that the inconsistency means he could be 32 for all we know?

Personally, if not for having the group we have doing the research, I'd be worried about the latter.

Wouldn't that concern be there with Soler as well?

Yep. But, at least I know he played against Bryce Harper in some Junior National games. if he was 23 or 24 playing against 15 and 16 year olds, it'd hopefully look fairly obvious to someone. That said, if he's 25ish and THIS raw, he would go from elite prospect, to a fringe guy, at best. One that you just gave 20ish mill to.

In the end though, I'm not all that concerned about either. I really, really want Soler.

MLBTradeRumors: Cubs are leading suitors for Cespedes.

That's really nothing new, the report they cite to make that statement was posted a page or two back.

Whoops. Been too enamored with the Packers of late to pay real close attention.

No problem, I was just on MLBTR and saw that as their top article and thought maybe some more news came out but when I saw the report they cited to make the statement I realized it was already posted here sometime between Sunday and today. Either way it's good news.

The more I think about Cespedes and Soler, the more I wonder if the best play here is to sign BOTH. The reason being risk factor. It's at least fairly likely one of these guys doesn't live up to their hype. I'd also say it's at least as likely that between the two of them, at least one pays for the pairs contracts. If Cespedes gets 40 mill(I don't think he's getting 60) and Soler gets 20, my guess is it's a better bet that we'll get sufficient production that covers their money. Meanwhile, with one or the other, to me, there's much more of a chance we don't. Granted, worst case being neither winds up helping out all that much and we've basically wasted 10 to 12 mill per year over the next 6. But, I think we could live with that kind of downside, based on the possible upside involved as well. But, to maximize the upside, I think it's smarter to grab both. Thoughts?

I've been on board with signing both for a while now. Neither players is going to sign a contract that would be crippling (or even significantly damaging) if they flop and both could be terrific bargains if they pan out.

There's no guarantee there will be impact FAs on the market in the next few years (the 2013 pitching market is already thinning), but we know Cespedes and Soler are available and have impact potential. I'd much rather invest 4/20 into Soler and 6/40-60 into Cespedes than feel I have to invest 6/150 into one of Hamels (29) or Greinke (29).

Cespedes HR tonight.

"Orange" down there must be like "Smith" here.

Orange is a cell phone provider in the Dominican. They advertise all over the DWL uniforms.

Cespedes HR tonight.

He's going to get hit by so many pitches.

I actually didn't think it was that bad. We've all seen much worse.

And if Nyjer Morgan doesn't get hit by pitches all the time for just being a douche, well, that flip of the bat and admire job by Cespedes isn't going to cause many problems.

Yet, I could be wrong.
