I'm working on an article on fixing the rotation for the coming season. I usually outline what I'm thinking so the article is a bit more coherent. I found that the tool I use for that has the ability to output things as an interactive PDF that can be uploaded. Thought it was pretty cool and figured I'd share...

Davis was terrible, Lopez, rotation Russel, Coleman, another Zambrano implosion....

Terrible season, mostly due to the rotation. Cardinals win the WS with crap despite losing Wainwright. 2011 was one of the worst overall seasons I can remember (now just W/L). Thankfully this offseason has gone extremely well. If it took sitting through 2011 to get rid of Hendry/Quade and amass this front office I'm ok with it.

2011 was 2006 all over again.

The first part of the article is up: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/home/7323-2011-rotation-post-mortem

The whole thing was getting way too long, so I divided it up. This article runs down the performances of the Cubs starters this past season and looks at what went right (very little) and what went wrong (way too much).

I'll get the article up tomorrow on how to make things better.

I am on the same, so can't enjoy your article, I'll look up the patch for safari

Read the article, and you summed it up very well, unfortunately it reminded me of the headline I saw in our local paper today. "Canyon in 2011 will have its driest year ever." It to was well written article but it too was also a "Duh!" moment. Keep it up

Was anyone else surprised at how similar Dempster was in 2011 to 2010?

Here is part two of the article.

Not a whole lot of surprises. The Cubs definitely need a #2 (or another #1) starter. Depending on what they do with Carlos, they may need help at the bottom of the rotation, too.

The article presents a pretty exhaustive look at the options. Be sure to share your comments here or there!

I'm resigned to the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox both desperately need pitching and will spend to get it, so I have a feeling Darvish goes to one and Wilson goes to the other. Of the remaining options, though, I'm apparently higher on Edwin Jackson than most everyone else, because I think he'd be easily the best option among the rest due to age and availability.

My concern with Jackson is that his price will exceed his production by too much. He's the third best option on the market and is coming off one of his best seasons by ERA. If we miss on both elite arms, I think I'd rather take a low cost option (Bedard, Francis) than overpay for Jackson.

I like Jackson a lot. But in this market, he could get a 4 or even 5 year deal from a pitching desperate team. Yes, he has frontline stuff and could wind up being a bargain on a longterm deal. The inconsistency though, keeps me from wanting to give him the longterm deal. He's just too risky, if you ask me. If he can be had for 3 years and 30 to 36 mill, then maybe he's worth looking into more. But I bet he gets 4 years and maybe 5.

My thoughts exactly. If I'm going to commit those years and money to a player, especially a pitcher, I want to know I'm getting elite production. I don't know that with Jackson and that's why I'd shy away from him.

Good article by the way, Tim.

Thanks. I actually meant to put more in there about some of the second tier options, but the damn thing was long enough already!

I have no real interest in Jackson based on what I think he will likely be offered. He's always had good stuff, but is just as likely to get rocked as he is to pitch a gem. Unless he's willing to sign for something around 3/24 then no thanks. With that said, I wonder if the Cubs could swing something with the Braves to pick up Hoover. With Delgado,Minor,Beachy and Teheran either contributing or looming, I would think he's available. Perhaps eat some of Byrd's contract inorder to pry him away.

This just occurred to me. I know the possibility of piggy backing Shark and Cashner has been brought up but I have a little bit of a different spin on it. How about you get one of them (I think I'd go with Shark) stretched out to start the season and have them start through maybe the All-Star break. Just before the break, you send the other guy down to Iowa for 3 weeks maybe to get him stretched out to start. Move the first guy to the pen, stick the second guy in the rotation. You've now had an opportunity to get them both stretched out a bit without overly taxing either one of them and haven't really given up anything in either the rotation or the pen other than the time guy #2 is in Iowa getting stretched out.
