Kyle, can you post the thing about Swaim with the defensive positioning analytics pretty pretty please

I don't recall an in-depth article about him specifically, but it was reported that was one of his major duties with the Red Sox over the years.

It was mentioned in passing here:

http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2011/10/31/why-dale-sveum-candidate-manage-red-sox

-- Sveum took a progressive, data-driven approach to his job. As the Red Sox’ infield coach, he studied spray chart data and took a more aggressive approach to defensive shifts than virtually any other team before Joe Maddon became the manager of the Rays.

And then here's the iPad advertisement/article that did a good job getting us all excited about the idea:

I wonder how Boston fans are feeling about this. On to SOSH...

http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7244960/chicago-cubs-offer-dale-sveum-managerial-job-source-says

MILWAUKEE -- Minutes after Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Wednesday night the Red Sox had taken a "good step" in bringing Dale Sveum to Milwaukee to meet with the team's owners, a source confirmed that Sveum had been offered the manager's job by the Chicago Cubs and it was "very likely" that he would take it.

Ha! Henry and Lucchino have to be ready to fly here and punch Ricketts. 8-)

I really don't know much about him and his Boston ties and previous employment. So Theo obviously had had past experience with him..

Sveum was the third base coach for the Boston Red Sox from 2004–05, working under manager (and former Brewers teammate) Terry Francona, and was part of the 2004 World Series championship team. In Boston, he was known for being aggressive with sending runners, though this often led to runners being thrown out at home plate. He left the Red Sox to rejoin the Brewers as the team's bench coach

Rosenthal saying the Red Sox declined to make an offer to Sveum.

The Red Sox declined to make Sveum an offer, leaving him with an easy decision, one that almost certainly will lead to him becoming the Cubs’ next manager.

I do like this little blurb about Fielder in his column.

Brewers stars Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun are among those who think highly of Sveum, who managed the Brewers for the final 12 games of the 2008 season and also in the playoffs that year.

I noticed this earlier Regarding his time in Boston:

The thing about the passion of the fans here and the media, it was kind of -- I don't want to say it was comical -- but if you do the same thing in Milwaukee, there's nothing said about it.

Apparently, he took his share of criticism from Sox fans.

Maddux or Francona would have been a much better choice imo. Its hard to have faith in a guy as a manager that was boston's version of waving wendell kim. Also I'm not too keen on the prospects of aggressive defensive shifts with anybody currently on the cubs. Im hoping he takes the Bo-sox job.

Luckily being the manager doesn't involve standing down the 3rd base line and waving runners home right? Bullet dodged.

Unless your name is Ron Washington.

I'm of the opinion that Theo and Jed wouldn't hire a guy that they didn't believe would promote their brand of baseball.

I don't see any red flags with Sveum. I'm cool with him if he's their choice.

I cant tell if you were agreeing with me or not. This is why we need a sarcasm symbol. If you are agreeing with me yes. If not then being manager does involve critical decision making skills which in the past have been questionable.

You guys should go read what they are saying at SOSH. Pure gold :D

This whole thing seems like a disaster. Did Sveum show up to lunch and say no thanks?

Maybe I'm overreacting, but its annoying things seem to come hard. Tbeo to Cubs and seems Ben'z first choice for manager to Cubs. I just hope things are not as f****** jp as it seems.

If you were a first time manager would you rather go to a situation where you know the expectations are a just a little lower from year 1 and you'll have more time to win or into a situation where the expectations and pressures are just a touch higher? I'd take the Cubs job.

Then what do you think the reason is?

Theo is a better boss than Lucchino.

I liked Sveum before. Now I love it. We just pissed off the Sox even more, got the most qualified manager, and made a big step in acquiring Prince Fielder.

Ultimately...I think this would be the big reason.

Honestly, it makes sense he would choose the Cubs over the Red Sox. He's a midwest guy, he'd be going to a team with a very positive atmosphere going on, the expectations in year 1 will be lower. Meanwhile the Sox have a negative vibe going on, and while they are clearly more ready to win, the expectations are a WS title or bust. Also, the team he would be managing quit on it's last manager, and their fans were extremely vocal of their criticism of him when he was there last time.

No brainer.

As long as he doesn't have Koyie Hill pinch it ( God forbid he's still on this team in 2012), and knows how to take a gassed pitcher out of the game at the appropriate time and make sound and rational decisions with the bullpen and other general things. We should be fine. Also, if he's not big on slappy, grittiness. even better.

Yeah, now that we got Sveum, we now only need $160 million to get Prince Fielder.

Lol I don't know about that. Probably not a penny less than 200 million. But we won't have to worry about random teams trying to make a big splash like the Orioles or Nationals. He has been Sveum's biggest supporter. If we can get him for a penny less than 200 million, we gotta pull the trigger.
