Maybe this has been covered, but why hasn't Dave Martinez been interviewed yet? I thought he and Maddux were said to be the favorites?

Supposedly, either the Rays denied permission or it wasn't asked.

Alomar's remarks about stats and fantasy baseball proves that either he doesn't know what sabermetrics are or he's never played fantasy baseball. I've never seen a fantasy league that rewards DIPS or BABIP.

I don't know much about Alomar as a coach, but his comments made me think he really doesn't like statistics all that much.

Not sure if this was mentioned, might have gotten buried in the news...

Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune was told by a source very close to Terry Francona that the skipper "deep down" badly wants to manage the Cubs and has told president of baseball operations Theo Epstein as much.

Epstein has said that Francona likely wouldn't have to go through a formal interview for the Cubs job given that he already knows everything he needs to know about the manager, but he also hasn't given any indication that Tito is truly being considered for the gig. Francona has interviewed for the Cardinals' managerial post, but the scuttlebutt from St. Louis is that he's not the favorite for that job.

Yeah this was a Trib article 2 nights ago and discussed a few pages back. I think Theo is mostly humoring Francona here and he is not a serious candidate.

I'm struggling to understand this point of view.

Just a personal opinion that Theo wants to start fresh without Tito. As the article said he is concerned with too much Bostonization of the Cubs, so it would make sense that with a new team he'd want a new manager, especially given his "10 year" theory.

Theo isn't going to humor Tito. If he gives ryno the courtesy of a direct 'youre not a candidate' call, then he'd do the same to Tito. Interviewing other candidates is perfectly normal, esp since Theo hasn't done a manager search for almost 10 years.

They are much more intertwined than you think. The basic fundamentals can be applied to both. Its just a matter of what your league rewards you with. In actual baseball its runs. In fantasy it is stats. I mean didn't Bill James start a lot of his prediction stuff in order to help him with fantasy baseball? Someone with a deep understanding of Sabermetrics will do quite well in a fantasy league.

I do agree, though, that Alomar probably doesn't know what he's talking about in regards to both.

i find the alomar jr. comments to be pretty baffling. i didn't expect him to be some sort of saber savant, but considering his current employer, i assumed he would be more well-versed on their value. either he is terrible at clowning or he really is just kind of an ignoramus.

From all accounts Tito has been the one pushing Theo to be a candidate for this job. I just feel like Theo knows what this team is going to be and most likely he knows what kind of manager we need for this situation. Knowing everything there is to know about Tito, it should either be a situation where he is the guy or he isn't.

Just my opinion...I've been wrong before.

Theo may feel Tito isn't a candidate. My disagreement is with your claim that Theo is humoring him. That'd be childish

Supposedly, either the Rays denied permission or it wasn't asked.

Presumably the only reason the Rays would deny permission would be if Martinez is next in line for their managerial job... so maybe they are planning to let Maddon go after the season and let Martinez take over.

This season? As in, right now? Or keep him for another year then let him go? Because if it's the latter, then that's a pretty strange plan to know you're going into a season with someone who you don't want. If it's the former -- the season's long over, time to get cracking on doing whatever they're going to do.

Or if Martinez has told them he's not interested in a managerial position right now.

Stay a bench coach then, and not even interview for one of the greatest managerial opportunities in memory?

To each his own I guess, but I think that would be pretty insane. At least come in for the interview.

I meant after the season when Maddon's contract runs out. Otherwise it would really be a jerk move for them to deny Martinez the chance to interview for a manager job and I don't believe they would do it (especially after Maddon himself stated that he believes Martinez is ready to be a manager). I doubt that is what happened, which makes me wonder what is really going on.

Maybe this is all part of Epstein's master plan to let the process play out, then swoop in and grab Martinez after all his other interviews have been conducted.

The Rays aren't letting Maddon go until something diastrous happens or he decides to retire.

Or if Maddon prices himself out of the Rays' managerial budget.

I'm wondering now, too.

Unless Theo & crew changed their minds?

Otherwise how is this not a jerk move by the Rays, denying a guy a fantastic career opportunity for advancement?

Maybe the Rays denied the opportunity to interview Martinez because they didn't want to risk him getting the Boston job.

Which arguably falls under the former.

Gordon Eades predictions, FWIW

The guess here is that Cherington has settled on a manager -- team sources say he is extremely high on Dale Sveum -- and is just going through the process, making sure his judgment is sound. Torey Lovullo, who interviewed Friday, will be a quality manager someday. Gene Lamont, who will interview Saturday, has had his day, although he could yet wind up in Boston as bench guru to Sveum, who played for him when both were in Pittsburgh.

(More predictions: Mike Maddux to be hired by the Cubs, Terry Francona by the Cardinals.)

I wonder how many days we are looking at before we have a decision? Would think it should come by Friday.

I heard Bruce Levine on the radio yesterday and he said the same thing. He expects a decision to be made by Friday.
