I honestly think it's a very nice way to say he wants to be manager of the Cubs and the decision to hire him has mostly already been made.

No. If the Yanks want Wilson they are going to get them. Period.

And whats with the Maddux bandwagon? Let's see what he has to say because beyond he's a good pitching coach none of us knows what kind of manager he will be. LR was a good pitching coach also.

Well if you ascribe to the theory that a manager's most important job is to handle the pitching staff properly, then it stands to reason why there would be a lot of interest in hiring a top pitching coach to be the manager.

I agree with this. If he really doesn't want to be a manager, I don't know why he goes through the motions of interviewing with the Cubs but not the Red Sox. IMHO, Theo already knows who he wants as the manager, and has probably let it be known to Maddux that he's going to get the offer after he clears the formalities of the manager search/interview dog and pony show. In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to pick the brain of people involved in other successful franchises and get a sense of how they run their operation.

I think it's a nice way of saying Boston's ownership is a joke and he doesn't want to work in that environment.

Exactly. He's doing damage control in a very professional way. Not even necessary for him to do either, but I don't think he wants anything to do with an organization where the very best part of it just left to go the place where he wants to begin his managerial career.

I also have a gut feel that this is biting Boston right now.

I wonder how the interview went today? No tweets on that yet eh?

Am I the only one who is very "Meh" on Alomar, Jr.?

Don't know one way or the other on him.

I still want Martinez.

Same.

Didn't Sveum interview yesterday? Did I miss what happened?

There were some clips of his PC on CSN. The PC are not really that big of a deal for the media, most of the clips I've seen is just the manager talking about his background and what kind of manager he would be.

I was always told when I was younger that pitchers don't make good managers because the players "don't respect" someone who only played 1 in 5 days. Are there any pitchers turned managers that I can look at?

See Black, Bud and I don't think Dave Stewart ever was a manager but I guarantee there would have been respect for him in a clubhouse. Oh and I guess Tommy Lasorda was a pitcher. I think for the most part an active pitcher can't be a leader of a team, but the manager has the respect of the clubhouse largely from his actions not his past player position or performance.

Tommy Lasorda was almost certainly the most successful. Some others are Dallas Green, Larry Rothschild, and Larry Dierker.

I don't know if he was considered "good" per se, but Roger Craig was successful for most of his tenure in San Fransisco.

Regardless of our new manager, we are going to be big players for both CJ Wilson and Prince Fielder. I don't see how we wouldn't be the favorites to land them if we signed their mentors to manage the team. Hiring Maddux makes us the favorites to land Wilson, just like hiring Sveum would make us the favorites to land Fielder. I would never sign a manager based on his ability to bring in a single free agent. That being said, it would be a really nice perk with either candidate in this situation.

Welcome to the board, but you're going to have to change your name...

Thanks for the welcome! I actually wanted to change my name anyways, but I wasn't sure how to do it. Why do I need to change it though?

PM a mod your new name choice, if you'd really like to change it.
