Does it really matter who the manager is? How much can a manager actually impact the team?

Plenty if he is a fan of giving away outs and bulldog starting pitchers.

Any idea on whether Maddux and Wilson have a very close relationship or not? If Maddux helps us land Wilson on a reasonable deal, I think I would be willing to see how well he would manage.

If Mike Maddux learned anything in Texas, it was how you should not manage a baseball team. Ron Washington comes from the school of giving away outs, so I'd like to steer away from that.

Martinez, Francona, and Hale are my preferred candidates but I'll be happy with whoever Theo and Hoyer decide on as the manager.

Didn't see this anywhere

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Cubs are interviewing Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin for their managerial vacancy.

The Red Sox interviewed Mackanin for their manager job on Monday, but it looks like they have some competition. While the Cubs have already ruled out Ryne Sandberg as a candidate, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times hears that Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum are on their short list.

Everything I've heard about the guy says Charlie Manuel is kind of a doofus and sort of crazy. So they must have somebody sane in that dugout or on the staff to assist him. I wouldn't be opposed to the Phillies bench coach, but I have no idea who he is.

I might be wrong, but he has managed in the Cubs organization, I think Iowa, in the past.

Oh, and he's originally from Chicago and a former 2B.

According to wiki he's managed Nashville, Frederick, Bowie, Pittsburgh and Cincy the latter two on an interim basis only.

Found it.

1988-89 in Iowa and 1985-86 in Peoria.

Edit: Make sure to read his management style.

What is that publication? How do they claim his teams steal well when they were in the 65% range? A lot of that was in the 80's and early 90's. It's a different game now, so I'd be curious where he stands on that issue today.

Yeah, I think it's a stretch to take too much away from his style - if it's even accurate - from 25 years ago in the low minors.

But that said, I'd love to hear more about his present game philosophies.

Don't have a clue. I just knew he sounded familiar. To be honest, I started thinking he might have played in Iowa and not coached there, but I knew he had something to do with the I-Cubs.

As for his style, I don't know if he believes in that stuff or not, I just found it rather humorous. From Chicago, former second baseman, (according to that site) espouses small-ball principles, but not named "the name we shall not use in this thread". That part I mentioned purely for entertainment purposes.

The Phillies were not a big SB, SH or SF team this year. They haven't been a SH or SF team in recent years, and while they have been a big SB team, that has been due mostly to 2 guys, Victorino and Rollins, and their percentages have been in the 80-85% range, which is great.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Cubs have both asked permission to interview Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux for manager.

Not sure why people think Greg Maddux would want to travel with the team or be involved in the on field activities of running the club. Everything that has been written to this point, save for the Wittenmeyer article yesterday, says that this is not the case. Beyond that, does anyone want both Maddux brothers on the field running the Cubs? That's a lot of "Maddux" influence.

Yeah there was an article not long ago where Greg has no interest in baseball right now, and wants to be with his kids especially his daughter you has some sort of headache problem.

It's fairly unusual to see 3 premier franchises all competing for a manager at the same time. How would you rate the openings?

1.Boston

2.Chicago

3.St.Louis

Okay since the Quade thread has been locked I'll just post this here. Not trying to argue, just want to know. I don't know where else to post this.

Like most people here other than Fred I stopped watching the 2010 and 2011 seasons pretty early as Cubs were faltering. Other than the 95-104 record he put up, I don't how how bad Quade really is, or whether he was just given a bad roster. But what were his specific habits that were bad?

I obviously didn't watch them as much as you guys but I swear every time I saw them, Dempster was pitching in the 6th inning at 110 pitches obviously gassed, Koyie Hill was playing, and the lineup could have been drawn out of a hat.

Edit - or what Rob and Outshined said

I was also disappointed at his Dusty-like "gotta play my vets dude' philosophy down the stretch this season.

Yeah I gotta think the attractiveness of the St. Louis job is based on whether Albert returns to them. Boston is in a bit of disarray, but is much closer to winning than the Cubs at this point.

Not so sure about this, given the events of the last month.
