Regardless of which side of the fence you are on when it comes to Epstein, for us Cub fans we are excited (at least cautiously optimistic until the intro PC is announced) about the change of organizational philosophy this move represent. I know you guys don't follow the Cubs, but the last several Cubs GMs (Hendry/Lynch/MacPhail, etc) definately do not adhere to the "Moneyball" era of baseball and they have been stuck on the Earl Weaver's "Double-plays and the Three Run Homer" philosophy for decades. So this change of philosophy is a welcome sight. Getting Epstein basically said, "welcome to the 21st century of baseball" Cubs. So, you can imagine how excited we are about Epstein.

Uhhh... I'm not sure he realizes that Earl Weaver was awesome. And our GMs were not.

His point is pretty clear, and correct.

If he thinks Lynch/Hendry/MacPhail were of like minds with Weaver, I'm not sure what he thinks the "Moneyball" (I hate misusing that term for this, but it is what it is) era is about.

The longer this drags out the chance of this not happening grows. If Boston doesn't get what they want they have no reason to let Theo go. He is under contact for another year. Right now I got it about 50 percent chance he's a Cub, but that could drop to 40 tomorrow if this drags on. Don't want to get all negative on you all, but I'm just throwing out the facts based on my own research of all the information presented to us. Let's not pop the champagne just yet. We have a long way to go.

It's top of the 8th and we have 4 outs to go. Let's see if we can close it out this time.

I've said my peace and I hope you all sleep well tonight, you are going to need it The waters may get rough tomorrow and this weekend. Let the October rain wash away your fears and keep the faith.

Take care and good night.

Thus ruling out the Red Flash that posted here.

His point is that we're excited about Epstein because he brings a large change in philosophy, which is absolutely the case. He just used the wrong example to illustrate it.

Sure if you want to go as general as possible on his point despite the fact that he either doesn't know what the change of philosophy is to or from (or both).

Does anyone remember who inspired my rant thread about people who toss commas around totally irresponsibly and recklessly?

I think it might've been that RedFlash guy.

If so, he's gotten much better about it.

There's a not so fine line between not being ready to pop the champaign and being overly negative. You sir seem to be bounding over that line.

Come on, the rest of us are ignoring CC.

Party time still in full effect in my general vicinity. Stop being so negative people. It's just negotiation. You stroke a little ass, everyone goes home thinking they're happy.

In the end, Theo's our GM and 2 years down the line nobody even remembers what was "given up" in the negotiations.

Boston absolutely has reasons to let Theo go.

1.) Due to the structure of his contract, keeping him around next season will cost the Red Sox seven million dollars. That's a lot to pay to a lame duck GM.

2.) Cherington has already been told he'll be taking over as GM. Reversing that decision now would at best have an adverse affect on morale and at worst might make him more likely to leave for the Angels/Orioles job.

3.) Theo is gone after this year regardless.

So, to sum up... keeping Theo around for one more year will cost them three times more salary than the next highest paid GM* and quite possibly cause them to lose the guy they've been grooming for the job for half the last decade. That's a lot to lose in negotiations.

*(Cashman at ~$2.2 mil, IIRC)

Don't know if this has been posted yet in this colossal thread:

BOSTON -- By all appearances, according to a Red Sox team source, it remained business as usual on Yawkey Way as of Thursday afternoon. The general manager, Theo Epstein, was in his office, and his coterie of assistants, including GM-in-waiting Ben Cherington, remained engaged in their normal duties, which in Cherington's case is first and foremost heading up the team's search for a new manager.

So far, according to the source, Epstein has yet to inform most of his staff whether he is headed to the Chicago Cubs to take over their baseball operations, despite widespread reports that he has accepted a five-year deal to relocate. The Cubs and Red Sox must still work out what compensation the Red Sox will receive for allowing Epstein out of the final year of his contract, and there is also the matter of which aides Epstein will be allowed to take with him.

This is meaningless. So, he hasn't announced officially because there's nothing to announce offically? Wow, such a revelation.

I'll guarantee everyone in that front office knows what's up.

Calm down people. Remember, Boston named their new GM today according to reports. It's all about what we have to give up at this point.

Thanks, Theo.

Cubs hold all the cards now, there will be compensation but the Red Sox will not rip off the Cubs.

If the Red Sox want to play hardball the Cubs can just pick a GM like Byrnes or even interview Cherington since it would be a promotion. Slide one of those guys into GM, keep Crane as President of Business Operations, and then Theo comes over 12 months from now with a huge stain on the Red Sox organization.

It's not the top of the 8th, the game is over and they are choosing what to eat from the postgame spread. There is no way Boston wants to bring back a lame duck GM that doesn't want to be there anymore and then not get anything in return when he leaves after next year. It just doesn't make sense. This is negotiating 101 and you are somehow getting fooled by it. Luchino pulled this same crap in 1995 when one of his guys wanted to take a GM spot in Detroit. We all knew it would be a brutal negotiation up front so let's not flip out when they can't immediately make a deal.

Were 95% there with the 5% accounting for a last second change of heart.
