Cubs tell Boston to go F themselves, they will wait till Boston becomes more reasonable:

Well, it's Kaplan, so [expletive] him, but I've got no problem with the Cubs not blinking if the Red Sox aren't budging. What I just suggested of McNutt + cash is more than fair. Ricketts' badassery is just off the charts this year.

Kevin Goldstein w/Baseball prospectus:

The Epstein holdup:

Make no mistake, the Red Sox have the leverage here simply by holding the most desirable asset in the negotiation. That's business 101. Adding to the difficulty for the Cubs is that Ricketts has now wasted more than a week with the promise of a new savior of a general manager, yet in reality, he doesn't have him in the fold.

Seems like all Kaplan ever brings is news that this saga won't end. Can we just get him to stop covering the story? Edited by BCVM22

Yet Boston has no manager, and not sure which GM will make that hire either. Its in their best interest to get this done soon too just to be able to move on. Nevermind, Cherrington can just make that hire.

Isn't MLB also watching this just in regards as to what compensation is going to look like for a GM?

(@thekapman) Sources have also told me that the Red Sox demands have gone from ridiculous to unbelievable.

(@thekapman) Cubs could put baseball operations team in place and wait as long as it takes for Theo. No way Bosox want to pay 7 mill to him

The Red Sox do not envision a scenario in which Epstein returns to their front office

Then they don't hold the most valuable asset.

I don't understand how so many people just ignore how it's tremendously unlikely that Cherington can do anything as the GM so long as Epstein technically holds the title. If the Red Sox attempt to drag things out along those lines you're almost certainly looking at MLB stepping in and maybe even a lawsuit or two. Look, maybe Epstein's contract has some insane clause that says someone else can do his job while he holds the title and he can't say or do [expletive] about it...but I highly doubt it.

"Unbelievable" is coming from the Cubs point of view. They seem to be holding the line that this is a non-lateral move for Epstein and that tradition mandates the Red Sox not stand in the way. Picking up his conclusion bonus was seen as a generous gesture on their point, not an ante.

Good for them. Hold the line.

The Red Sox are getting this death-glare right now:

Couldn't agree more. They need to draw a line in the sand, put together things in preparation for Theo and just wait it out. Worst case scenario we get him a year from now plus whoever we want to take from the front office. Id love to see the Selig get involve and force Boston's hand but I doubt that would happen.

The thing with the whole compensation thing is that its not like Boston can be like "Oh, you won't give us McNutt? We'll just get a better offer from somewhere else then." Their alternative is paying Epstein $7 million next year to do a job that nobody's sure he even wants anymore.

If you're Ricketts, can't you just kinda be like "Here's our offer. If it's a no go, then we request permission to interview Cherington. That's a clear promotion, and would be cheaper for us anyways. Good luck resigning Theo next year after all this, because we're going to take his heir."?

A WEEK

OMG ONOZ OMG ONOZ

What did you plan on doing that week, watch the Cardinals in the World Series?

no its just that making a change in management that will alter the course of the entire franchise for the foreseeable future should happen in less then 24 hrs or NO DEAL.

There's a reason Goldstein isn't a businessman, then.

No, we don't get him a year for now. Ricketts is just going to go on with his search. He's not going to waste a year with a lame duck GM.
