It's cute that SOSH still thinks "pitcher on the 40-man" leaves Garza on the table.

http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/68454-compensation-for-letting-theo-go/page__st__1200

I wanted to go point and laugh, but it doesn't appear anybody has mentioned Garza after this report came out.

We can't call this guy Chris Carpenter, that is way too depressing since he's not the Chris Capenter who is a really good pitcher.

He needs to be referred to from now on as S.C. Carpenter, since he is officially "Significant Compensation."

My favorite, particularly since I'm also bugged by another Chris Carpenter

Given that today is the first day players could be moved to the 60-day DL (or so I've read), and that the Red Sox have to make room on the 40-man roster for Carpenter, maybe the Red Sox pitched a fit with the intention of delaying the trade to protect their players?

But we knew all along they were going to give up an asset and not just some empty minor league jersey.

And they gave up a better asset than I felt they should and that precedent would require.

If Lucchino got his way, we would have given up Castro or Garza. He's probably mad about the return. And I wouldn't worry too much about losing Carpenter. We already acquired a very similar player in Casey Weathers, and we still have Blake Parker. Right-handed relief pitchers are the easiest "asset" to acquire in baseball.

I do agree Lucchino didn't get exactly what he wanted, but I also doubt he truly expected to receive Castro or Garza either. My expectation is that he decided to pitch a fit in the hopes that he'd get something better than the already set precedent and he did that. This wasn't some awful defeat for the Cubs or anything, though.

And as far as Carpenter goes, how you evaluate him means a lot in determining whether he's too much to give up. If you think his absolute upside is an average to above average middle reliever, then who cares. If you think he has the stuff to be more than that or to garner more in a trade than that, then it looks worse.

That's a pretty interesting thought. Seems odd that he'd make himself look that foolish, though. I'd think he could have delayed it in a much more graceful fashion than that, if that were his intent.

I can't wait to see that board explode when we send the Padres Brett Jackson.

We've been talking about assets and collecting assets, that's exactly what Carpenter is. With his stuff and upside, he could easily become a part of acquiring other, better assets if he came up this year and had success.

isn't that exactly what we did?

In a way, yes. Again, my annoyance isn't in giving up Carpenter for Theo, it's that prior precedent was much lower than Carpenter, but Lucchino pitched a fit and got his way. I really felt like we should have given up a lesser asset for Theo than what we did.

Fun with old SOSH quotes:

You may actually be understating it. Brett Jackson (Cubs #1 prospect) would probably slot into our system at 5, behind Middlebrooks, Kalish, Ranaudo and Bogaerts, Matt Szczur would likely be at 8-10 and no one else in the Cubs system would be in our top 10-12 (not counting Baez, who is not eligible to be traded). Trey McNutt and Rafael Dolis would likely slot into the mid-teens.

BA Ranks:

Brett Jackson: 32

Middlebrooks: 51

Bogaerts: 58

Szczur: 64

Ranaudo: Not top 100

Kalish: Not top 100

Mayo just put Carpenter at #8 in the Red Sox system.

Quit saying Lucchino got his way. I highly doubt this is the resolution he had in mind. The Cubs did just fine here.

Lucchino didn't come close to getting his way. This deal was agreed to months ago and he nixed it, holding out for more. And didn't get it.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, Carpenter had been agreed on months ago, and Lucchino pitched a fit and demanded more.

don't know why we gave up this guy, and not McNutt, who'd have been #25 in the Red Sox system

Thanks for that but why post in the Theo/compensation thread?

Also, are we sure the Cardinals, Brewers and Reds are even going to want to compete in the same division as us when they see our projected 3-4 of Byrd and LaHair? I'd be scared....real scared.

Interesting to see a guy I respect like Bruce take such a strong stance on that situation. Not saying he's right or wrong to do so, just interesting.

-Dale Sveum is going to help Alfonso Soriano to "hustle"(Bleacher Nation)

Hope this is just to appease the masses and not indicative of Sveum's priorities.

I don't hate this, relatively speaking.

That's a Castro quote from a Miles article. Not a Miles quote.

I love 1-2. Like 6-7, especially if we can at least strike silver wit Stewart. If we could get a lefty platoon mate for Soriano, I'd like 5 a lot more. 8-whatever. It's the 3-4 which are an eye sore.

Garza-Demp-Maholm-Wood-Volstad could end up a formiddable rotation if the stars align and all goes our way. Same goes for the lineup, with DeJesus, LaHair, Soriano, Soto, and Stewart all huge ?s. We could hover around .500 and in July trade for some guy we never even thought about in the offseason. Add the right amount sugar, and Kool-Aid is a wonderful beverage.

It pretty much is. If you read what he actually said, he said it's a habit for some players and it's just hard to break away from (staring at long fly balls) and he'll try to help Soriano break that habit. Didn't seem like he cared that much so much as paying lip service and answering what was asked.

Yea, don't mind that at all. It'd be fun to see Castro hit 3rd, though.

I want Smardz over Volstad.
