ESPN1000 mentions a PTBNL but I haven't seen that anywhere else.

My assumption is both clubs are receiving a "PTBNL" so the trade can be adjusted based on Carpenter's performance. If he exceeds expectations, we'll get something, if he flames out, they will, if he's where they determined is his expected level, they'll be no further compensation.

Good point but I wonder what they'll use to measure his success. The way this has gone so far I have no reason to believe that Selig won't ultimately be the one deciding the metric(s) as well.

I don't think it can work that way. The PTBNL has to be either a player or a list of players submitted to the commissioner's office at the time of the deal. And this apparently was a deal.

In the very least, it can also become cash considerations.

ETA:

And what if the teams can't agree on who that player will be? This happens rarely, but if no names are agreed upon initially, the clubs will agree on a price to paid in lieu of a player.

So they just can't seem to agree on what player goes to the Red Sox(while agreeing on who goes to the Cubs), I guess we'll just have to pay you 8 dollars.

Muskat tweeted that the PTBNL must be decided by 4/15, so no chance of a '11 draftee going either way.

Had to be player for player transaction. Will be settled by April 15th, if not sooner. So the PTBNL's are truly nothing to get worked up over. Just recompensating Red Sox for having to include player.

This PTBNL for PTBNL stuff is dumb.

I love SSR and Tranny's idea of gobbling up Bowden if he's taken off their 40-man.

Seems like a few Boston guys are tweeting that the PTBNLs are procedural and not significant.

Fair enough then.

Yeah, technically the Red Sox have to send the Cubs a PTBNL because the transaction has to be a player trade. You can't just send a player somewhere for nothing.

You can send him for cash or future considerations.

The PTBNL stuff is just procedural. Theo can't technically be traded to the Cubs... and the Cubs can't just give Carpenter to the Red Sox under the CBA. So the Red Sox have to send somebody unimportant to get the deal done. The Cubs will just send somebody unimportant back to even that part out.

PTBNL = nobody.

Fun with old SOSH quotes:

You may actually be understating it. Brett Jackson (Cubs #1 prospect) would probably slot into our system at 5, behind Middlebrooks, Kalish, Ranaudo and Bogaerts, Matt Szczur would likely be at 8-10 and no one else in the Cubs system would be in our top 10-12 (not counting Baez, who is not eligible to be traded). Trey McNutt and Rafael Dolis would likely slot into the mid-teens.

BA Ranks:

Brett Jackson: 32

Middlebrooks: 51

Bogaerts: 58

Szczur: 64

Ranaudo: Not top 100

Kalish: Not top 100
