Stuff like this is the real reason we're in a crappy spot right now. Not the large contracts that were handed out. Hell, we'd probably be in amazing shape right now even with the tied up money if we had prioritized drafting/player development more highly years ago.

I think they did prioritize it years ago, they just weren't good at it and didn't understand the competitive advantages they could have used.

Fair enough. That's a better way of stating it.

B&B are talking to somebody (Schuster?) and he asked Theo if he looked at FIP and xFIP to evaluate pitchers. Apparently Theo kind of gave him a dismissive "We have our own proprietary stuff for that", which I find both awesome and insane that he has his own method of evaluating pitchers. Our guy is smarter than everybody else and it's [expletive] awesome!

I think he mentioned that in one of the videos posted, actually. The one with him out at spring training with the radio guys outside and they asked him if he used VORP or something like that.

Boers just said he doesn't think Epstein is going to ignore the short term...so I guess they just think adding a great 1B when there is an opening at 1B and two good options available isn't a good idea.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what to think about that one, so I just let sit there and fester for a while.

Hmmm Here's what he said regarding Soriano

"From afar, he still brings a lot to the table from an offensive standpoint ... he had 26 bombs, he's still a threat offensively," Epstein said. "There are other areas of the game where he hasn't quite performed up to expectations the last few years.

"I think it's a sign of a good organization to look at every player and ask, 'How can we get the most out of this guy?' I think with Alfonso, there's more in there. There's a real chance for improvement. Obviously, we know what his ceiling is. His ceiling is he's a very dynamic player, he contributes in all phases of the game and who is a legitimate, legitimate middle-of-the-order threat. That hasn't necessarily been the case, the all-around game hasn't been there in recent years.

"I think the question is, how do we unlock that? I'm looking forward to sitting down with people who have seen him play every day and worked with him behind the scenes and try to find a way to make that happen.

No bueno, I just picture Matthew Broderick.

Photoshop Theo over his face and we got ourselves a winner, no?

Everything: I like Theo for saying things like this.

Bolded: Sign a lineup stabilizing bat like Pujols or Fielder.

If there's a legitimate argument for/evidence in support of a concept like this, I'd like to hear it. Not being a smart ass. It's possible that the thinking on this has changed from when I last gave it some thought and I'm open to hearing an argument.

There isn't, and it takes more than one anyway. Even Pujols has Holliday...then a bunch of retreads and mediocre prospects who play up...possibly due to having those two in the middle.

That seems to be a purely subjective argument. The only way I could see it making a difference would be to have Pujols hit behind Soriano, which may allow Soriano to see more fastballs. However, Soriano's inability to layoff breaking pitches down and away probably obviates this argument anyway. That said, adding an elite bat to a lineup would improve it by virtue of the addition of an elite bat. I just don't see how that would have much effect on the other players' performances in the lineup.

Oh my god, the first call after that interview. If Theo was like sex to your ears, that "close up shop in the Dominican and focus on the good old USA" nonsense was the sex toy rape scene from Se7en.

Or the rape scene in irreversible. What a stupid statement.

"There's a good hitter batting behind this guy, should we try to get him out or maybe do something else?"

"Soriano swings at sliders low and away even though he can't hit them, do that even with Pujols behind him."

Some of you already heard this, but Theo on Starlin from the ESPN radio interview...

I think he does a lot of different things well," Epstein said. "You have to put it in context: This kid is 21 years old. Most 21-year-olds are maybe getting into high-A ball ... When (Yankees shortstop) Derek Jeter was just about the same age, he made 56 errors in the low minor leagues. So there is, with defense especially, there's a maturation that comes only with time and experience. Offensively, the things he's done at the big-league level at his age are the things that guys who go on to be 10-time All-Stars, guys who actually go on to be Hall of Famers do. ... His ceiling is immense."

So that means Theo won't be listening to people who think Castro should move to 3B in the near future? Good.

I was listening to highlight of Theos session with Mulley and Hanley earlier, and wow, I knew that kind of thinking existed in baseball, and I've heard that kind of talk, but I never though that I would in respect to The Cubs. Almost like an out of body experience.
