Peter Abraham / Boston Globe[/url]"]

The anticlimactic announcement that Theo Epstein has been named savior of the Cubs is not expected to be made today.

Yet according to national baseball gurus Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal, Epstein is busy putting together a front office that could include Jed Hoyer of the Padres as his GM. Padres assistant GM Jason McLeod could be in the mix, too.

Hoyer and McLeod are former Epstein lieutenants in Boston. As to what Red Sox staffers might join Epstein, that seems to be part of the compensation negotiations. There are a few Epstein loyalists who surely would want to stick with him.

If Hoyer leaves the Padres, Josh Byrnes is the logical choice to become the GM. He has been with the Padres since being fired by the Diamondbacks.

Meanwhile, on Yawkey Way, Ben Cherington is running the baseball operations department and is basically the GM. Earlier today, Cherington spoke to the Globe on behalf of the team to answer some questions for a story that will be in the paper tomorrow.

So while it appears awkward that Epstein is still officially GM of the Red Sox, he is running the Cubs and Cherington is running the Sox. You'd like to think that somebody (Bud Selig?) would get it settled eventually.

That's just really strange considering the deal hasn't gone through yet.

I think this proves the deal all but has gone through, and there is just about no way that Theo isn't coming to the Cubs. They are just working out the details and having a hell of a time doing it.

What it all comes down to is that Theo Epstein is getting his old genius buddies all together and to make some [expletive] history running the Cubs and that's [expletive] awesome.

And I definitely want some smart people around to challenge Theo. To see what happens when someone who has created greatness gets complete control and is no longer challenged on anything, see Star Wars I-III.

I really want this to hurry up and come to an end, but it's flat out amazing to me how far Ricketts has moved up in my eyes since the 2010 Hayden Simpson draft. 12 mill spent this year, bigtime spending on IFA's as well, and now the probable hiring of Theo and possibly getting Hoyer as well? Good God, the guy has everything headed in a direction we have never really seen. The right one. I wanted Cuban bigtime as our owner and now I think Ricketts was the better option. Can't even believe what we're seeing, but this ship is turning and we're soon all going to have fun watching the Cubs.

Being told Lucchino is willing to make Theo sit out. Red Sox believe Selig will side with them. #Cubs #Theo #RedSox

Don't much like Julie but take it for what it's worth

Seems to be more optimism on Theo Epstein compensation talks today from Red Sox side.

I love it. Two Red Sox people make two completely opposite statements within 35 minutes of each other.

Never even heard of her.

Is she the idiot from Red Eye who was posting on one of the bloggers' (Cubs Den, I think) twitter accounts that you should trade Castro for Epstein if you have to?

For what it's worth I don't think there's much chance Selig would side with Boston. He wouldn't want to set a precedent of trading huge packages of prospects for front office personnel. What's to stop teams from hiring large groups of baseballs top minds to long contracts and then trading them all of for prospects? It's a bad road to go down. Nevermind the promotion part of this.

Also, isn't he pals with the Ricketts or something? I thought they were his personal favorite for the Cubs ownership spot.

Fringe blogger/writer for Red Eye yes. I don't even follow her due to her extreme leftist political views that she feels compelled to push in her tweets constantly. I have no idea if she has any legit contacts at all. I just read it retweeted by someone else thought it was interesting.

Yea, she's a moron. Nothing to see there.

Ooooh. That could actually be it. My memory is a little hazy for that for some reason.

Worked with her when doing 312. She's occasionally humorous and pithy. Wouldn't count on her for much more than that, though.

It's like Ricketts is this badass bully and he is picking on all the teams for their best assets and if they say no he'll beat them up.

I wouldn't put it that way, but I love how the rich kid fanboy owner who the talking heads were sure was going to run the organization into the ground actually knows what he's doing and is cleaning house even sooner than expected.

@thekapman

Signifigant progress made today. On a side note, Ricketts impressed a candidate he interviewed for the Cubs job who spoke on the condition of annonimity. He said Ricketts wants his Cubs to be an elite franchise, not just a quick fix.

The story is on csn but I can not post it from my phone.

I actually expected sooner and my disappointment over that was one of the reasons I was skeptical for a while.

Side note - but does anybody know if the Red Sox show advanced metrics, or even OBP, on their scoreboard at all?

Would be nice if they at least showed everyone's OBP or OBP and SLG.

On this debate surrounding Theo, Cubs, Red Sox... there will be a solution. Bud's in the mix. Expect it soon

No idea as to this guy's credibility.
