I don't think the day to day job duties of Hoyer and Theo will be all that clearly defined. I think they'll work as a collective brain trust. Epstein is the celebrity name that Ricketts can market to fans, so he'll be the "face".

Right. Maybe Hoyer would handle the little moves here and there and do the extra "GM" things that are asked of that position. But the bottom line(and all that really matters), is that Theo will be heavily involved in any meaningful moves made.

Exactly. In this case, they're just titles. You can't bring Hoyer over and make him assistant GM. It would just look bad. And this sells the promotion on Theo's part much better, too.

Yep.

I don't agree with your interpretation of how something like this would work. It's not just titles. It's just titles when you make the assistant to the traveling secretary the new vice president of assisting traveling secretaries. If you go out and get 2 current GMs to run your office, it is doubtful that one of those guys is going to be a de facto asst GM. If Epstein is going to be the president of baseball ops, then he's going to be the president of baseball ops and the GM is going to be the GM. And that GM is going to have asst GMs. If Theo is president, he will be involved in the biggest moves, like signing Pujols or trading for an ace, but the GM will have final say on virtually all other transactions. Otherwise he isn't GM.

Peter Abraham / Boston Globe[/url]"]

The anticlimactic announcement that Theo Epstein has been named savior of the Cubs is not expected to be made today.

Yet according to national baseball gurus Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal, Epstein is busy putting together a front office that could include Jed Hoyer of the Padres as his GM. Padres assistant GM Jason McLeod could be in the mix, too.

Hoyer and McLeod are former Epstein lieutenants in Boston. As to what Red Sox staffers might join Epstein, that seems to be part of the compensation negotiations. There are a few Epstein loyalists who surely would want to stick with him.

If Hoyer leaves the Padres, Josh Byrnes is the logical choice to become the GM. He has been with the Padres since being fired by the Diamondbacks.

Meanwhile, on Yawkey Way, Ben Cherington is running the baseball operations department and is basically the GM. Earlier today, Cherington spoke to the Globe on behalf of the team to answer some questions for a story that will be in the paper tomorrow.

So while it appears awkward that Epstein is still officially GM of the Red Sox, he is running the Cubs and Cherington is running the Sox. You'd like to think that somebody (Bud Selig?) would get it settled eventually.

Emperor: Tom Ricketts

King: Theo Epstein

Viceroy: Jed Hoyer

Arch Duke: Josh Byrnes

Grand Duke: Ben Cherington

President: Rick Hahn

Vice President: Tim Wilken

GM: Jim Hendry

Die in a fire.

Don't worry, in this hierarchy, the GMs job is to pick up coffee and make sure that the urinals mints are fresh. Sadly, he'll grossly overpay for the coffee and set the organization back another 5 years.

Then the world might implode.

It occurs to me that in a hypothetical situation where Jim Hendry wanted to come back in some sort of scouting capacity, I would be happy to have him around.

Didn't someone joke about a college of GMs when Hendry was first canned?

Exactly. Why are people having trouble understanding this?

I don't think Theo can productively fill his day only plotting strategy about how to negotiate with the Pujolses of the world and figuring out how to trade for the aces that come along every so often.

Right, because that's all he'll be doing? What the hell is wrong with you people?

Yes. Taking the most backward organization in the majors and turning it into the most advanced is a part-time job.

Sullivan throws something against the wall regarding Heath Bell.

San Diego may be willing to let Hoyer leave his contract early, sources said. Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts has a good relationship with Padres owner Jeff Moorad, which would prevent a Cubs' request to interview Hoyer from turning into a long and contentious saga like the compensation talks with Boston.

On a related subject, Hoyer also told the Union-Tribune that he has already begun talks with the agent of Padres closer Heath Bell, who wants to remain in San Diego.

Would the Cubs be looking for a new closer under Epstein's regime

So he's saying that Hoyer has seemingly been nogotiating with Bell to resign with The Padres when all along, he's secretly been trying to steal him for the Cubs? Yeah, I don't think it works like that.

Yeah, that makes no sense and it never happened.

I think you're overlooking the differences in what a GM's duties would be in different organizational structures... i.e. ones where there is just a GM running the baseball show, like the Cubs have been under Ricketts/Hendry, ones with a true team CEO/President like MacPhail was and Lucchino is, and others, as the Cubs look to be doing, with a President of Baseball Operations and then a GM beneath him.

I think the duties in the latter will be much more of a collaborative effort than the two former.

We have one sports writer that isn't a complete imbecile and he works for the one paper dumb enough to put up a huge pay wall around him. FIX THIS, CAPITALISM

If he's outsourcing all the day to day baseball duties to the GM it sure gets a lot closer to it. Guys like Epstein get to these positions because they're super smart and work 18 hour days, if he goes to 12 hour days because someone like Hoyer is taking on all the traditional duties of a GM it'll feel like a part time job in comparison.

In any case, I don't think it's just a titular distinction. Epstein will be in the trenches doing the nitty gritty to some degree I imagine.

Does that not sound like something Epstein would desire given what we know about him and his past?
