The idea that Boston is holding the "take with" number hostage for improving the haul makes a lot more sense than that they are holding Epstein himself hostage.

Epstein is leaving for a nominal promotion, and the Cubs reportedly are agreeing to pay his $3.5 million exit bonus owed by Boston. That's plenty of compensation for a non-lateral move.

But if he wants to bring some guys with him for lateral moves, and they want him to agree not to, then some negotiation seems more reasonable.

Author Seth Mnookin says Theo will not have the public expectations here and media attention like he did in Boston. I think Seth is smoking something if he thinks that.

I think you underestimate the stupidity and insanity of the Boston fan base. Chicago has its idiots, NY is incredibly demanding. But Boston has all the idiocy of Chicago plus the demands of NY.

Yeah, you've got stupid fans and sports media here, but it's a distant 3rd behind NY and Boston.

There was a Boston Globe guy on the Score this morning. I didn't catch the whole conversation. He was saying that he expected the deal to go through, but that it wouldn't be easy negotiations. He also threw out that Boston could make a case for tampering, given the exquisite timing of Ricketts secretly firing Hendry. FWIW.

Guh? How could the firing of Hendry be an argument for tampering? Are they saying they think that Hendry was fired, but then kept on as a smokescreen to cover negotiations/talks with Epstein? Hey, that's great. Where's the proof?

While it is entirely possible Ricketts could have pulled off some tampering, when he fired Hendry Boston was in 1st place by 2 games with the 2nd best record in baseball. When they announced the firing Boston was a .5 game out of 1st, and 8.5 games up in the Wild Card with the 3rd best record in baseball. It's not like they fired him as Boston was crumbling. Epstein's job status wasn't really an issue until very late in the season.

What you can't fire your GM? If he talked to Theo before hand and then fired him then they have a case.

If he talked to Theo at any point prior to asking permission they have a case. The firing of Hendry has nothing to do with it.

Like I said I'm not getting my hopes up until a press conference has been scheduled or at the very least Cubs confirm it's a done deal.

Because it was posted earlier and already discussed.

We're taking a collection to get that stick removed for you.

Agreed. I really doubt Ricketts reached out to Theo before he asked for permission.

I know we've all been burned by false reports in the past and all of that, but trust me this is a done deal. But obviously Theo is under contract with Boston and will be until the Cubs and Red Sox agree on compensation. The Cubs and Red Sox are in different leagues, so it doesn't hurt to utilize Epstein until everything is complete. Not that Cherington would need much ramping up, but I'm sure Theo is doing what he can to get the new GM prepared for the job.

It's similar but not exactly like when teams are working out the pieces of a trade for a player. He doesn't leave the team (although he doesnt play for fear of injury. don't think the Cubs are worried about that), he stays with the team until he's not on that team anymore, except in the rare case when they send em home. But obviously Henry and Epstein have always had a strong respectful relationship so he's not going to kick Theo to the curb.

With all of the major news outlets reporting the deal as fact, all the analysts discussing how the move effects both teams, all the introspective articles written about Theo and his new career challenge, it would be nearly unprecidented if it didn't happen.

Not following that.

that definitely doesn't make any sense. They are just jealous that their baseball team has as many leaks as the titanic, while the Cubs are stealthy.

There should be a way to see this thread all on one page so you can see what has and hasn't already been posted.

Or they could have very good reason to state their claim. I doubt a team is just going to throw this out there without some kind of proof.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/10/14/red_sox_cubs_negotiate_compensation_for_theo_epstein/

“It’s a double-edged sword for him, working in Boston,’’ Mnookin said. “He’s the only GM in the country who can’t have a peaceful dinner out if he wants.

“Chicago won’t be the same. It won’t be the same story line in Chicago as it is in Boston. He won’t be the guy who grew up a few blocks from the ballpark.

“The attention, the scrutiny, it won’t be a 365-day thing for him. There won’t be the public expectations and the media expectations.’’

Expectations media attention will certainly be very high in Chicago. But they were out of control in Boston. Chicago will still be very demanding of course, but I think he's right that it won't be Boston-demanding.

I can see that. You have to remember that Boston is a much smaller market and town. Boston proper has 20% of the population of Chicago, and Boston metro is a little more than half the size of Chicago metro. People think Chicago is provincial, but New England is truly provincial. There are not a ton of outsiders in NE/Boston. They all were born there, grew up there, and now live and work there. Everyone cares about the Red Sox. Chicago has a lot more factors. They have a significant population of transplants from Michigan, St. Louis, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. Not to mention that 40% of the city roots for the other in town team. Granted, whatever I say about Chicago having transplants, its tenfold in New York. But New York is such an overwhelming place, and the co-center of media in the US, they can totally obsess over everything the Yankees do and there will be an audience willing to follow it. Chicago has its own pressures. No one ever said the media here takes it easy on our sports teams. We have some of the biggest a-hole reporters in the country that want nothing more than to bring down players that don't treat them properly. The fans are passionate enough to boo the [expletive] out of people when things aren't going well, and have always been willing to turn on an underperforming player and drive them out of town. If Theo thinks he's going to have a southern cal laid back existance in Chicago, he's in for a shock. But I highly doubt he thinks that.
