I know we've relaxed the family site stuff, but I still think it'd be inappropriate for me to post what I'll be doing with my RedEye cover Friday night.

There was already a report saying Byrnes might be hired as part of Epstein's front office. Push comes to shove they could talk to Byrnes about running the GM position for a year while we wait for Epstein and many other Boston front office people's contracts are up. Then hire them and slide Byrnes back into an assistant position. He might be ok with that when he hears his old buddy is being screwed out of the job right now.

I was once reprimanded for a slightly altered version of this pic.

Couple small things from today

Negotiations between the Cubs and Red Sox "are moving along at a snail's pace," according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago. "There's no such thing as a timetable for these transactions," but there doesn't appear to be anything major that would keep Epstein from eventually joining the Cubs.

"The Red Sox like utilityman Jeff Baker," writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, though Baker alone wouldn't be suitable compensation. Cafardo says the Sox would also "love" to send John Lackey to the Cubs but unsurprisingly, "that is also a long shot." Cafardo lists a few of the Cubs' notable prospects who could conceivably go to the Sox, though I'd personally be surprised if Chicago would part with top minor leaguers like Brett Jackson or Matt Szczur.

In addition to taking some Boston front office members with him to Chicago, Epstein may also take some of the Red Sox medical staff, tweets Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe.

Mike Quade says he wasn't consulted about the Cubs' pursuit of Epstein, the incumbent manager tells ESPN Chicago, though he has no hard feelings about not being a part of the GM search.

Would you guys be willing to give up slightly more value than we otherwise would to allow him to bring over a handful of guys he might need?

Gonna be one hell of an undertaking to build an entire staff that fits his standards from scratch with nobody from Boston.

I'm a bit late here but yes, yes I would. It would speed up the process of building up the program from the bottom up.

Byrnes is nice but he won't be enough for what Epstein wants to do.

Sadly, yes. That was quite the work of art.

They can have Vitters and Baker and a hearty handshake.

I'd withhold the hearty handshake

Give them Marquez Smith instead of Vitters and a fist bump instead of a heart handshake and it's a deal?

first bump with explosion

The medical staff bit is interesting because in the SI article he did mention that one of current market "inefficiencies" he wants to exploit is keeping pitchers healthy.

With the manager & GM departing (& at least one coach) + painkillergate + chicken&beer&videogame scandals, I'd guess the medical / conditioning etc staff people aren't feeling too comfy about their current employment situation.

There is no chance it even comes to this.

This guy RedFlash used to post here, I think...he posted this at Brewerfan.net

Regardless of which side of the fence you are on when it comes to Epstein, for us Cub fans we are excited (at least cautiously optimistic until the intro PC is announced) about the change of organizational philosophy this move represent. I know you guys don't follow the Cubs, but the last several Cubs GMs (Hendry/Lynch/MacPhail, etc) definately do not adhere to the "Moneyball" era of baseball and they have been stuck on the Earl Weaver's "Double-plays and the Three Run Homer" philosophy for decades. So this change of philosophy is a welcome sight. Getting Epstein basically said, "welcome to the 21st century of baseball" Cubs. So, you can imagine how excited we are about Epstein.

Uhhh... I'm not sure he realizes that Earl Weaver was awesome. And our GMs were not.

His point is pretty clear, and correct.

I'm not saying it will, I'm saying it's an option and they don't necessarily need to feel like they must give up to much for someone who's available without compensation and possibly with most of his current staff in a year. They don't need to feel they are negotiating desperately.
