That seems a likely move, given the apparent restrictions on bringing along his current guys.

Who would be hitting against RHP in that 3B platoon that you're saying shouldn't be hard to stay above avg with? Not being argumentative... genuinely asking.

Mods can delete/move/whatever this post if they don't want this discussion going again, but the question was asked of me and I didn't want to appear to be ignoring it.

I'd go with a Flaherty/Baker platoon. League average OPS at third was something like .716 this past year and around .730 or so the year before. Baker is a near certainty to give us an .890-.900 OPS on the short side of the platoon and Flaherty posted a .280/.347/.478/.824 line in AAA this year. Obviously he probably won't do that well as a rookie in Chicago, but between him, LeMaheieu, and cheap FAs we should be able to find somebody who can pair with Baker to give us a .717+ OPS overall at third.

Had completely forgotten Flaherty even existed and didn't know he had done so well in the minors. How is his glove supposed to be?

EDIT - BTW, those were Flaherty's numbers in AA and AAA combined last year. His AAA numbers were significantly worse.

From what I recall (my recollection here may not be trustworthy) I think he's decent enough at third - his best position defensively, I think? One of the minor league guys could clarify that or put me in my place, though.

And I should note this platoon would be contingent on us pursuing and getting one of Pujols/Fielder and CJ Wilson (I'm not assuming either, just giving my preferred plan of action). If we can net two of those three, we'll likely have to go cheap everywhere else for next year. If we were to miss out on Wilson, I'd have no problem pursuing Aramis on a 2 year deal or so.

You're right, that was my mistake. I also don't know his minor league splits, so there may be a better option for a platoon if he doesn't hit righties better than lefties. The main point is, we've got options between him and LeMaheieu, though.

If the press conference is set for Friday October 14th 2011, the irony is that its the 8th anniversary of the Bartman game!!! Coinsidence!! I dont know. Man i sure wish Ron Santo was here to see this!! :yahoo:

Theo-to-Cubs story is less of a bombshell than I expected, locally. Media fanning flames, but response not really there. #NFL dwarfs all?

For real? I feel like the media is eating this up. They have certainly overshadowed Robin Ventura and cut greatly into Bears discussion time on sports radio, but that may also have to do with their play.

He's saying that the fans aren't as excited as he expected.

In an interview with the Tribune editorial board Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel was asked about the Cubs' efforts to get financial help from the city to renovate Wrigley Field.

"I've had one meeting, a couple of months ago," Emanuel said. "As I told (the Cubs), I'm going to represent the taxpayers of the city of Chicago and you have to represent your interests.

"Now that I've got the budget done … I am going to sit down with them."

But he said he has "a jaundiced and critical eye as it relates to anything (asked) of the city for a private owner and a private entity. I will look at it, and I'll evaluate it."

When asked what he thought of Theo Epstein, Emanuel said: "I think he's great. I think it'll be great."

It would probably help if it was official.

It's really not being treated like it isn't. With the contract details and everything out, most people are considering it a done deal.

That's my thinking. I want to be excited, but until everything is finalized and official I keep holding down my excitement. I don't want to see Theo pull a Beane or see us give up BJax or somebody - if none of that happens I'll be thrilled.

The ? mark isn't in the thread title anymore :clapping:

Hopefully the press conference is Friday, then Saturday Theo goes to the Hawks Bruins game wearing a Hawks jersey just to stick it to Boston meatheads

In case you needed to be reminded that Theo isn't a baseball moron

Seriously, listen to this... it's getting even more awesome to hear him say these things.

This is like one of those days when you are 13 and your parents aren't home and you keep thinking "I couldn't possibly again" and then the Saved By the Bell with the swimsuit calendar comes on.

That's about right.

Jesus [expletive] Christ.

...

I'm going to give this man so many babies.

Dude. The leap forward is orders of magnitude from where we've been.

I think most Cub fans won't even understand what the hell is going on.

This is unbelievable. If Bernstein is right and the Cub fanbase aren't really responding, then I'd say there's a freight train about to smack them squarely in the skull.....they've got no idea how things are about to change around here.

Frakking awesome!

According to one baseball source with close ties to Francona, Francona told staff members the day before the club announced that it was not exercising his club option that Epstein wanted him to return as manager.
