Apparently, the Joe Torre/Verducci book "The Yankee Years" also talks a lot about the Red Sox.

And, while they were winning, the Red Sox were changing the way they do business, which is also detailed in the book.

When John Henry, Larry Lucchino and Tom Werner took charge of the Sox, they became enamored with statistical analysis. Keep in mind that this was before the publishing of MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis. So, they hired Bill James and kept Dan Duquette. But Theo Epstein started putting his Ivy League degree to use.

While Billy Beane was chasing players with a great on base percentage, Theo took charge of Boston and went after many of the same players with money to spend. In one winter, Boston acquired Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller and David Ortiz. That became the core of the team that would finally bring a Word Series Championship to Boston.

Here's a great nugget from the book. The Red Sox have compiled a database of every college baseball player in history. Then they matched those performances with the way those same guys played in the big leagues. Now, they can look at the numbers of current college players and see trends that nobody else sees. That's how far ahead of the game Boston is right now.

In case you needed to be reminded that Theo isn't a baseball moron

Seriously, listen to this... it's getting even more awesome to hear him say these things.

Jesus [expletive] Christ.

...

I'm going to give this man so many babies.

I had to go back and read some of the Gary Hughes interview after listening to this.

Jones' signing was panned in Chicago, mostly because of his declining numbers the last two seasons--.254 in '04 and .249 in '05. Hendry said Jones' .279 career average, and his average of 23 home runs per season since 2002, are more telling numbers.

"I certainly look at that rather than the last line on his bubble-gum card," Hendry said.

and you can go [expletive] yourself, jim

I don't know when the last time I was this excited about the Cubs. Certainly not over any point of the last three years.

It's really quite fascinating, isn't it? That we're as excited about bringing in a guy who won't throw a single pitch, swing the bat even once or spend a second in the dugout as we collectively were for any [attempted] big-name free agent/trade acquisition the Cubs have made/tried for in the last five years.

But Epstein has had his clunkers, too. He signed Josh Beckett to a four-year, $68 million extension last season. Beckett won 13 games in 2011, meaning the Red Sox paid $1.21 million per victory.

John Lackey got a five-year, $82.5 million deal. He went 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA. The Red Sox paid $1.27 million per Lackey win.

Kaplan vs. Theo, the interview.

Hah, that's going to be hilarious.

Remember when we thought Quade vs. Kaplan was awesome?

It's funny because Kaplan thinks Theo's awesome, but he clearly has no idea why he does.

When he realizes what Theo is really about, his head will explode.

it will be like borat when he started singing at the rodeo.

It's not, though, because this guy is what's going to bring us all that.

I'm amazed GMs are valued (monetarily) as little as they are.

Oh, good [expletive] gravy.

Yeah, Beckett having one of the best years of his career was a real "clunker."

I love how he leaves out Beckett's ERA but throws in Lackey's.

AT LEAST BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR STUPIDITY AND DON'T BE SO DAMN TRANSPARENT WITH YOUR HORSESHIT AGENDA.

i love that rosenbloom article where he discounts theo by saying that he hasn't won a world series without the help of a steroid-aided middle of the order.

old scouts like hendry always come across as demeaning and dismissive, the term "bubble-gum card" itself was most likely conceived of by hendry, and it must have killed him to have had to wait for the right moment to show that part of his fat ass to the stat nerds and bust out the bubble-gum language.

but listen to theo, i can see how old scouts might perceive him as arrogant, but he's actually just smart, any arrogance is completely inferred by much dumber people. theo's arrogance is genuine while hendry has to concoct his own. theo's trying to educate while hendry is trying to demean. he is a sour old [expletive] and his time is up, he can now go back to being the top scout for creighton again or wherever he came from.

i've had enough of assholes like that. let's win some [expletive] world titles.

What a beautiful, beautiful man. Only slightly less beautiful than Theo.
