I hate Purdue

You hate a mediocre-at-best team that Notre Dame will probably beat by at least two touchdowns?

I'm not sure ND will beat any team by 2 TDs this year.

I hate that purdue is on the schedule and take up a Sept spot at that. They aren't rivals, they share no interesting history. So they're close geographically. So is IU, but we don't play them every Sept.

Wait, what?

"The Fighting Irish also have a yearly rivalry with the Purdue Boilermakers, who are also located in the state of Indiana. This rivalry began in 1896 and the two squads have met each year without interruption since 1946.[2] The Fighting Irish lead the series at 54-26-2 as of 2010.[2] The two teams play for the Shillelagh Trophy. The series has been marked by a number of key upsets. The Boilermakers ended Notre Dame's 39-game unbeaten string in 1950 and posted upsets in 1954, 1967 and 1974.[2] They also hold the record for the most points scored in one game by an opponent in Notre Dame Stadium with 51 in 1960 while Notre Dame holds the record for scoring the most points by an opponent in Ross-Ade Stadium, Purdue's home field, with 52 in 1983. On September 28, 1968, #1 ranked Purdue defeated #2 Notre Dame 37-22 behind the effort of Leroy Keyes, a two-way player for the Boilermakers.[12] It was the eleventh 1 vs 2 game (and the sixth involving Notre Dame).[11]"

I didn't say there wasn't history. Just not interesting history. It's a boring game from both sides (Purdue had over 8000 seats unsold as of Monday).

I hate Pat Fitzgerald. I hope we run up the score on his arrogant ass. What has he ever won? What has he done beyond beat up on cupcakes. Now the "we recruit a different type of kid" comment. Go [expletive] yourself Pat, get over it that Illinois never offered you a scholarship, and move on with your life. That is all.

He beats Iowa every year. That's about it though.

You can't exactly blame him that Illinois still qualifies to play in the Big Ten.

We won by like 90 last year.

And we are coming off a bowl victory, something Fitzgerald has never done.

for the record, neither purdue nor notre dame are very interesting.

Exactly, if you're not an ND fan, you aren't watching this game. So why play it every year.

And you meant 'is' you big meanie.

Because Purdue usually sucks, and it gives ND an easy win, all the while giving ND the advantage of saying they play a hard schedule including 3 Big Ten teams and USC.

Right. ND needs Purdue to say they have a hard schedule. They can't just point to the SOS rankings.

Actually I usually watch at least some of that game. It feels like something traditional and meaningful even if it's not.

There is certainly some tradition if the teams have played every year for the past 65 years. Weather that tradition means anything is another story.

And this isn't meant as a snarky question but a legitimate one. Would you and other ND fans want to see Navy taken off the schedule. That seems like a more worthless "rivalry" to me.

The US Naval Academy operated a base out of ND during WWII without which the school very possibly would've gone under. ND has played Navy every year ever since (already had played them yearly since the 20s) to repay the 'debt of honor' or whatever you want to call it. That series will never end and I'm fine with that.

Fitzgerald never said that in relation to Illinois. He said it in general. Besides, it's true.

This is Petrino trying to get his team and their fanbase fired up -- getting cocky after their first 4-0 start in 60 years.

Frankly, I'm glad. This rivalry needs more vitriol. Should be an intense game with Persa back on the field.

NW is .500 or better the past 4 years. Stabilized a team that had 3 good seasons the 15 prior years.

Consistently winning keeps butts inseats and brings in donations to the program.

I know that when I think Northwestern football, I think butts in the seats.

Usually the opposing team has lots of butts in seats.

Illinois' football attendance & following isn't exactly anything to write home about either. It's rather pathetic to be honest with you. For a school with that many alumni and a relatively decent football history, they should have a full stadium and a long list for season tickets.

If you think about it, there are several Big Ten schools with football fanbases that are less than what they should be: Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana all have pretty weak football fanbases. Now, most of those schools have sucked for a good bit of their history, but they've had good seasons as well.

Yup. Navy is #2 behind USC for me.

two years in a row taking down #1. life is good.

i dont understand how the hell LSU is ranked above Bama, to be honest. I'd be fine with the two of them being at the top and OU being No. 3.

This was my feeling initially, as well, but I guess LSU has the more impressive resume at this point (most impressive in the nation, actually), so I couldn't really argue with their placement, even if I think Alabama would win head to head.
