“I was told Rogers Communications said: ‘Whatever it costs, sign him,’ ” said one executive. “Only (president) Paul Beeston and (general manager) Alex Anthopoulos know the number on the bid in baseball operations.”

That's all kinds of goofy. So a Canadian broadcast conglomerate is dictating the Jays' baseball operations? Maybe next they'll ask Jose Bautista to manage their 4G rollout.

That's all kinds of goofy. The Cubs have some sort of NEWSPAPER COMPANY telling them how much money they should spend? Have you heard this one guys??

How much were people expecting Darvish to get posted for pbefore this process started? I thought I remember seeing something between $30-50 million. Yesterday they were saying that one team bit extremely high and the Nippon team was really excited when they saw it.

If that's all true, and the Jays offered between 40-50 mil, then the Cubs either blew that away with their offer, or their offer was well short of what Toronto bid.

I'm sure Theo had a great feel for what range other teams were going to offer. I don't think he would make an offer just to say he made an offer. Or make an average offer and hope that the market was exaggerated. I could be wrong though. I honestly think this was his main target in the offseason, and I think the Cubs might have won this.

All based on a lot of speculation and twitter garbage though, so I could be way off.

Yeah but no one knows the Cubs bid. And thats the only way they could possibly know is by knowing what the other teams bid. I'm pretty sure that the identities of the teams that made the individual bids are kept hidden so that the Japanese team doesnt even know what team its selection when it chooses the highest bid. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere yesterday.

Unless I am missing some information that you've seen leaked, I think the Cubs are definitely in play here still.

There's plenty of chatter this morning that the Blue Jays have won the bidding process. The New York Post is citing "multiple" sources, yet none are named and the word "probably" was used in front of "have won". Jom bowden has said he's heard the same thing. NYP mentions no number has been attached to Cubs bid yet. I'd post links, but on my cell. Still, a non story? I've thought all along the Jays would get him, but I can't help but still have some optimism here.

It seems like it's all based on the report from the Post that someone (I think Kyle) posted here last night, which doesn't report that the Blue Jays won at all...only that the Blue Jays have the highest of the supposedly known bids.

Despite the caveat in like the 2nd or 3rd sentence that the Cubs are rumored to have a large bid the amount of which isn't known.

What if two teams with the exact bid won? Would their be another bid by the two teams?

Good question. I'm sure there's a rule somewhere for it, but with teams placing bids down to the penny, odds are ridiculously low it'd ever happen. My guess is the team receiving the bids would allow the player to negotiate with both teams.

Yes I know.

Then why do you find it goofy that the owner of the team is trying to control the operations of the team? That's all kinds of goofy.

I do find it odd that a corporation such as Rogers would make such a proclamation involving such a small portion of their operation. Shareholders aren't going to like it.

Looks like Crane Kenney is doing some consulting work.

Perhaps a move similar to the Soriano signing in an attempt to boost franchise value prior to a sale?

The Tribune was in a state of upheaval at the time and the Cubs were already up for sale, so it's quite different.

Surely you can understand the difference between the parent company telling the team how much they have to spend, and dictating which players to spend it on.

The executive officers of Rogers Communications valuating a Japanese pitcher doesn't strike you as odd?

Kinda far afield from their area of expertise, no?

A parent company dictating the assets it wishes to acquire to make their product better is perfectly rational.

Nothing irrational about the parent company dictating what assets it wants, but it's very irrational for the parent company to tell them to pay whatever it takes.

Unless a Canadian communications company has found an angle to make extra money from a Japanese star that will return more than whatever that contract costs them.

Not saying it is likely, but it would fit.

I'm sure they meant it literally

No and no. If someone from Rogers is pulling strings, I'm quite confident it's somebody who knows about that piece of the business.
