The next time one of these plane/apartment shopping/singing in a bar/whatever rumors comes true, it will be the first time. It's bound to happen eventually, I guess.

Knowing what we've heard since, and knowing what I know of Jake Peavy now that he's been in town for a couple of years, I fully believe that singing in a bar story.

Maybe Epstein will be this years Roberts/Peavy/Granderson/Garza. We ended up getting the last one, so who knows.

Does Granderson really count?

I don't really remember many rumors that we were getting him...just a lot of people hoping we would because he was out there for the taking.

I emailed the Tweets to B&B.

Abbatacola just said on the update that the report about the Cubs execs on a plane was inaccurate.

Why would they fly to Boston anyways unless it was to pick Theo up to go back to Chicago? I would assume they'd want Theo to come to Wrigley, see the offices, etc etc.

Hmm then again, given how crappy the Cubs offices are said to be, maybe they don't want him to see it

Take solace in the fact that B&B and drinky aren't exactly rock solid sources of breaking news, nor do I necessarily put much stock in them debunking anything.

But it's still probably not true.

Oh god. The Flight Aware rumors are bringing up bad memories of the Michigan coaching search before Rich Rod was hired.

FWIW Olney (I believe it was him) was on the radio earlier today saying he's guessing Epstein winds up with the Cubs.

FWIW -- which means, probably nothing.

What show?

from that gammons article:

In Chicago, he won't be referred to as a "sun-deprived nerd" in a local newspaper.

apparently gammons isn't too familiar with some of the sportswriters in chicago.

I'm fairly certain it was Van Pelt...

There's a recap of today's show posted, now I'm even more certain it was Olney, and it was on Van Pelt's show.

Olney's reasoning: essentially, he figures Boston will be offering a position that puts Epstein further away from baseball operations than he wants to be.

Edit: and actually that recap has a link to the interview, what do ya know? It's at the tail end of the clip.

Yep. Its better he doesn't have a tan. Chicago writers hate brown people.

Sorry if it's already been discussed, but didn't see any of the more recent replies remarking on the potential compensation. While I understand some sort of compensation would be required for Epstein, the majority of the packages I've seen thrown out just seem too pricey for my liking. Personally I would find the price too high if it cost either of Garza or Castro. Also saw a Cashner & Jackson package suggested - that's pretty steep too considering the low count of quality players we have at this time. What do people think the cost would be to pry Epstein & how does that compare to what you feel would still result in a solid win in the transaction for the Cubs?

Phil Rogers says Ricketts may hire 'em all:

While the Cubs are taking steps aimed toward hiring Theo Epstein away from the Red Sox, it's possible they won't stop there. Executives with some other teams have heard discussions about the possibility Ricketts could attempt to hire two people on his list from the lengthy round of due diligence he has done on replacing Jim Hendry.

That would mean it's conceivable he could hire Epstein and someone on his secondary tier such as White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn or Braves director of pro scouting John Coppolella. The most likely hire to work alongside Epstein — as opposed to be sitting in the main chair — would seem to be Padres assistant GM Josh Byrnes, who was with Epstein from the start in Boston.
