For those who care, Janzen Jackson has enrolled at McNeese State. My guess is he'll play there for a year and then enter the NFL draft. He'll be a really interesting guy to watch in the draft.

Just in time to intercept about 6 of Jordan Webb's pass attempts in the season opener.

I still can't fathom that Webb is the starting quarterback for a major conference team.

If you mean at this point in his career, I agree. If you mean, ever...I think it's kind of a silly POV.

He was a 3 star recruit, and he's not wholly untalented. He was the #28 pro-style QB in his class, ahead of QBs taken by Stanford, Fla St., and a few other ACC schools. But he's not the kind of guy who should be starting as a RS sophomore. He's the kind of guy who should be able to step in 3, 4 years in the program, after he's developed physically. Unfortunately, he's the best we've got at this stage. He has allegedly improved his strength and arm.

If the O-Line is healthy, he could be the kind of QB who makes just enough plays. We have enough talent at RB (Bourbon, Miller, Pierson) that he won't be expected to shoulder the load. If he doesn't make enough plays, we have talent coming in behind him, and I expect him to slide down the depth chart next year.

Is Bergland sitting out this year because of the assault charges?

Yes. Or least, allegedly that's what's going on. He's RS this year and can't practice with the team because his legal issues keep dragging him back to CO.

I don't know which places around here pick up PPV games. I'm not a drinker so I'm not familiar with any bars in the area and the only restaurant places near me are Shoney's and Ruby Tuesday.

What's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy [expletive] on the wall and the mozzarella sticks?

Shenanigan's?

*pistol whipped*

I'll be in Charlotte for the ECU/USC game. Ruffin McNeil looks like a new man after his bariatric surgery this offseason. Our number one DB is suspended for the game for verbally assalting a police officer or some ish. Probably won't matter anyway, but I'm hoping for a close game...

I really hope we pound them in Week 3. I hate Bob Stoops.

Makes sense. Do you think he would've started/gotten decent playing time this year without the charges, or was RS probably in his cards anyways?

If he'd have shown up for Spring ball as planned and had that, plus Summer workouts, plus Fall camp, there was a shot to supplant Webb. He supposedly throws a beautiful ball, better than anyone else on the roster. Once he missed spring and summer, i doubt there was much chance he'd win the job.

I watched Webb on and off during his high school career and never got the sense that he was a BCS conference quarterback. He was heads and shoulders above everyone in his area and had been since he was a sophomore, but I never thought he'd be half the player he was against defensive linemen that weight over 200 pounds.

Maybe next year he'll really take off, but I think he's a backup who owes his scholarship to playing cupcake schedules and having one of the best head coaches in the state.

What do the size of the linemen have to do with his ability to be a QB? He can take a hit from BCS defenders--he took about a billion last year. He's accurate. He's shifty. His arm is adequate. He could be a serviceable qb. He's not a "centerpiece of the offense" QB. And he might not be the perfect fit for Gill's system. But I think he has the tools to be a guy who can help win ball games. He just needs the right pieces around him. I doubt we have the right pieces.

Pat Martin is going to transfer from Tennessee to an ACC school (most likely) for personal reasons. With him and Janzen out of the picture, that glut of depth we had in the defensive backfield is kinda starting to look a tad thin.

They're still very young, though, with two juniors, a sophomore, and a true freshman as the projected starters.

Hey, I'm rooting for him to do well (except when he plays Missouri) so I can say "boy, I knew him when" but for three years in high school he played against extremely weak competition and stood around waiting for receivers to get open like Tom Brady in 2007. I just don't think he's going to be very good.

Haha, fair enough. Jury is out, no doubt. Having a guy like him starting as a RS SO is not ideal. As a Mizzou fan, you might be lacking a little perspective, though. You guys have been recruiting top QBs for a while. We don't have that luxury. We have to hope smart guys without 4/5* measurables can still compete and win. Luckily the recruiting is getting better with Gill. I think Berglund, Cummings, or one of our two QB recruits this year will ultimately bump him unless he makes huge strides.

S Florida makes me nervous. I'm high on nd for the first time in a while but I wish we opened with someone like purdue.

I'm excited to see these freshman ends though. Glad I only have to wait until 12:30 this year.

It's really going to temper those expectations when you start the season 0-2.

ha, we'll see. i can't wait to ruin um's first night game.

and another 5-star d-lineman commits to nd today.

I think it was an o-lineman.

ESPN has him as an OT, Rivals a DT. Either way they both have him as a 4 Star not 5 Star ;-).

Texas A&M notifies the Big 12 that we are applying to join another conference and will withdraw from the Big 12 effective 6/30/12 when we are accepted.

I hate that this is such a long drawn out process, but it should hopefully be over soon.

Would it be too mean of me to be entertained if the SEC secretly courts Texas as the 14th team after A&M?

In reality it will probably be Virginia Tech, with the ACC adding UCF or something.

Texas has never wanted anything to do with SEC, crappy academics and the worst history of cheating of any other conference.

I didn't realize the Big 12 was an academic powerhouse.

Not at all. It would be funny to most of the country. But they would never give up that much power.

It's no Ivy League, but it's a lot better than the SEC.

I love how far some peoples' heads go up their own asses when it comes to the academic gravitas of an athletic conference.

Yeah, I don't really concern myself with that. Just because other schools in the same conference may be a third tier academic institution doesn't mean it's going to bring us down any. Our president referenced the fact that Rice doesn't have any issues playing in Conference USA, which isn't known for their high academic standards.
