After a horrific first two games, Reed has actually settled down and gave two decent-solid outings. Let's see if he can continue it. I don't recall his specific stuff off the top, but I don't believe he's expected to be a high K guy as he moves up the ladder (for some reason, I'm thinking he's a groundball type pitcher). We'll see how that develops, but here's hoping he can continue putting solid outings out and developing.

He's got a low 90s FB with a good curve. I think the K-rate is dependent on how the curve progresses.

Heh heh, at some point he'll want to have a K/BB ratio of quite a bit better than 9/9.

But that's the game with teenagers. It's a projection game, and if we want to develop teenage talents, I can't let myself get impatient because a guy isn't developing right away and because I can't necessarily tell whether he ever will.

I do admit I've been a little disappointed this summer. Last summer with Greathouse, Kurcz, Reed, Richardson, Hartman, Fitzgerald, I thought we had a whole crop of overslot type kids, all of whom had some low 90's capacity in HS/JC. With some natural development and maturation, who knew how hard they might be throwing or emerging? But a year later, other than Kurcz the other five all seem worse than they were last summer.

Ackerman, different story, he has obviously gotten better. And Brian Smith, while he got killed this week, had shown some hints.

Hopefully Reed is about ready to kick in and start to show some progress.

Wells has looked okay. Especially for an 18 year old in the NWL. Greathouse intrigues me. He seems like a guy with above average stuff that he hasn't learned to control yet. If he does, he could be good. Kind of like Juan Cruz's development arc.

Vitters went 2-3 with a walk today.

One of the 2 hits being a home run, his 8th of the season.

Which I intended to mention but somehow left out. Not sure how I managed to do that.

Just got back from the Peoria vs Cedar Rapids game.

Sat right behind home plate by the scouts, my buddy hooked me up with some solid tickets. :good:

Austin Kirk was pitching, sat 87-89 most of the night. Touched 90 a few times.

Has a really good curve, a slower curve that was 69-71, reminded me a lot of Lillys. Its definitely his out pitch right now. It will be interesting to see how he does as he moves up. Not sure he'll rack up the K's like he is in A ball.

He throws a lot of strikes, usually around the plate. Overall I was really impressed. Kirk doesn't have any pitch that will wow you but he throws strikes and paints the corners.

I'll be at the game tomorrow so I'll try to look more at the position players, although now that Szczur is gone, there's not a lot of intrigue there. I do think Alcantara has the chance to be a major league SS. I like his range, and he has a good arm. He's still pretty young too.

I'll have more tomorrow and Monday

Starling Peralta throws tomorrow so that should be fun.

not sure exactly where to put this, but to brag about my home town, the dayton dragons set the consecutive sell-out streak record with their 815th straight sellout today.

and of course the best dayton dragon memory:

I saw Sean Gallagher pitch last night for the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates AAA) and he was on it. 7 IP - 0 R - 1 H - 0 BB - 7 SO. Jeremy Hermida had the only hit against him. His stats for the year aren't great but he's still only 25, hopefully he can still turn out to be a decent pitcher for somebody.

Didn't his dad post here in the past?

Yes. In fact he posted that the Cubs called Gallagher up for the first time before it was officially announced. Micah Hoffpauir's wife also used to post here, and Kyler Burke's brother still does on occasion.

I really thought he was going to be a solid back end rotation guy for the Cubs prior to the trade.
