I saw him Sunday. Granted, it was 98 and muggy and miserable, but even though he topped out at 98, he couldn't throw a breaking pitch for a strike and people were sitting on that fastball and beating the [expletive] out of it.

I'm always a little wistful when I see other teams promote their prospects quickly without regard for the financial ramifications

Well, you don't draft a guy like Marco Gonzalez and worry about arbitration/super 2 considerations.

Doesn't change my wistfulness :(

I'm more wistful of those sexy numbers he's putting up. Almost 11k/9 and K/BB of almost 5.

Looks like he's not ready for prime time yet based on his 2 starts so far.

2 straight years of [expletive] up the overall top pick(don't need your Buxton crap Kyle). At any rate, my guess is Daz better be prepared to be an Astro.

Trea Turner is off to a .205/.313/.265/.578 start through 83 AB's in the NWL.

Well, that's because advanced college hitters are expected to tear up the lower levels.

Advanced pitching prospects are supposed to struggle in the low levels...

Pitching in the California League - and Lancaster, at that - can't help.

Yeah, I think Law addressed Appel in his chat yesterday. Basically what he's heard/seen is that his stuff is fine velo and break/movement wise, he really thinks a lot of this is where he's pitching and that he should be moved up even if he isn't quite ready just to get him the hell out of those places. Fwiw, I don't completely buy that.

High A hitters are hitting .353 off of him. Sorry Keith, the league may excuse his HR rate somewhat, but he's getting completely torched. You don't get to blame a near 2 WHIP on park factors.

Send him down to the MWL, then. Don't promote him to AA.

Yes, Keith Law, promote the guy with a 9.57 ERA and these type of scouting report:

@jjcoop36: Mentioned this in the BA chat yesterday. Have heard from six pro scouts who have seen Appel as pro. Best report had him turned in as 3/4 sp

Matt LaPorta has retired from baseball.

The former first-round pick never panned out in the majors and has now decided to open up 18 Pie Five Pizza places throughout Tampa beginning in early 2015. LaPorta, 29, hit just .238/.301/.393 over parts of four seasons in the big leagues.

I was always surprised that he was a bust. Both the stats and the scouting reports said he should have been good.

Joey Gallo has a 42.2% K rate in 116 plate appearances at AA. He still has a .446 wOBA, but damn that's a lot of strikeouts.

The Astros are said to be using a medical concern, specifically about an abnormality with Aiken's elbow ligament, to leverage him into accepting a lower bonus. This would enable them two of their other draft picks. The two sides initially agreed to a $6.5 million bonus, but their revised offer now sits at $3,168,840, the minimum amount required to ensure that they would receive the No. 2 pick in 2015 as compensation if they fail to sign Aiken. "We are extremely disappointed that Major League Baseball is allowing the Astros to conduct business in this manner with a complete disregard for the rules governing the draft and the 29 other clubs who have followed those same rules," said Close. There's a lot of work to do in order to get a deal in place before Friday's deadline.
