Carpenter getting promoted

Rotoworld:

The Cubs are making plans to promote right-hander Chris Carpenter from Double-A Tennessee.

Carpenter will give depth to a bullpen that has been used heavily all season and just lost setup man Kerry Wood. The 25-year-old Carpenter possesses a hard fastball but has posted a disappointing 5.36 ERA in the minors this season. He'll be used in low-pressure situations.

While I'm excited to see him, this screams of"we've tried everyone else, let's see what he can do now" because it's not like he's actually earned a promotion, by any stretch. Hell, he just got demoted from AAA to AA.

Weve already burned through Berg, Mateo, and Stevens. I guess Caridad could get another chance, but hes not doing so hot himself. Blake Parket could be another options. No thanks Thomas Diamond, no thanks Ramon Ortiz. Im happy with the move.

So once Carpenter does get promoted, whats the over/under on when in his 1st game up Len and Bob have some sort of convo about the 2 Chris Carpenters?

I predict this doesn't end well. Carpenter hasn't been able to control his stuff all year long. That might work if he were able to pitch to the Cubs, but most major league teams aren't going to swing at crap outside the zone.

Good for Carpenter. He's not a young guy, and he's going to be able to work on his problems just as easily as he would in Iowa or Tennessee. Maybe the bigger stage helps him focus more. I like it better than recycling someone else from the Iowa pen.

Wonder who's going out. Would be odd if its Maine after him just being recalled yesterday and then not pitching. If that's the case why not just promote Carpenter yesterday? Won't be Marmol/Marshall/Samardz. Could be Coleman I suppose. Doubt we cut bait on Rodrigo Lopez just yet. Would be stunned if they DFA'd Grablow.

some people here seem to not really understand what "over/under" means.

You think so? Back end of the bullpen guys can sit around for 5-7 days at a time, at least when the Cubs aren't starting loogies in the rotation. I'd think what he needs is regular work, which I'm not sure he'd get in Chicago.

That's true, he may not get as much work. For a couple weeks though, I don't really mind it. If he stays any longer then it probably means he's earned a higher spot in the pecking order.

Coleman is going back down.

Not a fan of the move either. He'll likely struggle and won't get much time either.

Actually this makes a lot of sense, assuming they are prepping Coleman to make one of the starts on the DH. It's 15 days away, so they will be able to recall Coleman by then and have enough time to get him on schedule for that date.

I don't like this move either. He needs work. Personally, I think he should go back to the rotation in AA or AAA. Even if his future is in the pen, he needs the reps on his stuff, and going 2-3 innings at a time, to start a game, may be the best way for him to find some rhythm.

His stats are interesting gives up less than 1 hit per inning and would have pretty good numbers, but for the walks.

I don't see how they think calling him up will help him cut down on the walks.

Reed Johnson is activated off the DL and Colvin was sent down as well.

And just when he had cracked the .100 mark too!

Its where he belongs if he has any hope in he'll of a future. If what were looking for is a 5th outfielder and a pair of legs, Campanas the guy for the job, although I personally like Montanez if for nothing else the background story.

Any chance they think working with Riggins will help with his control? I'm grasping at straws here to find the reasoning. He needs some regular work, but I'm not too concerned if we are talking about maybe two weeks on the ML roster. I'd hate to see him sit at the end of the bullpen for two months though.

I really think that the only reasoning is that the other options have sucked. Wood, Marshall, Marmol is a great back end. Sharks been pretty good. Grabow hasnt been awful at times and Russell is an OK spare. Everyone else weve tried has been bad or awful. Gooz might be back in the next month, at which point, we'll see what happens, although Id prefer keep Carpenter after that and try to trade Grabow. We only need 2 lefties in the pen.
