$1.2MM for Dunston, Jr.? I didn't realize he was considered that good of a player.

He's got a high ceiling and might have gone top 3 rounds if he were signable (I think Keith Law really liked him) but he's definitely not valued by anyone as a 1st rounder. That said, this was what it was going to cost to buy him out of his Vandy commitment.

I really doubt that is still true.

BA[/url]"]The Cubs have signed 11th-round outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. from Valley Christian High in San Jose. Dunston will receive a signing bonus of $1.25 million. Dunston's father was the Cubs' first-overall pick in 1982 and spent 18 years in the big leagues, mostly with the Cubs. Dunston Jr. was committed to Vanderbilt.

Unlike his father, Dunston Jr. swings from the left side of the plate. He is raw at the plate for the son of a big leaguer, but has above-average speed and scouts love his passion for the game. Dunston, who was committed to Vanderbilt, has a slender, 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame and it's obvious that his best baseball is in front of him.

Oh, nevermind. Weird double post.

Yeah, I thought it was some sort of temporal disturbance for a second.

Stupid smart phone in a dead zone. Sorry.

Guess it was Goldstein, not Law, who liked Dunston (by the way, nice post, Kyle):

Perfectly fine signing, actually. RT @consigliari51: @Kevin_Goldstein Cubs showing why they will never win. Just threw away 1.25. Horrible.

Also:

@KendallRogersPG Been saying this was likely for a while, but #Alabama OF and #Cubs 8th-rdr Taylor Dugas officially headed back to college.

The following amateur baseball players signed by the Cubs have received bigger bonuses than Hayden Simpson since the 2010 draft:

2010 5th rounder OF Matt Szczur

2011 2nd rounder 1B Dan Vogelbach

2011 11th rounder OF Shawon Dunston Jr

2011 IFA signing SS Luis Enrique Acosta (Dominican Republic)

2011 IFA signing C Mark Malave (Venezuela)

Possibly Javier Baez and Dillon Maples too.

@keithlaw Disagree. You're light on him. RT @consigliari51: Can we go ahead & say no one will make a worse decision than the Cubs giving Dunston 1.25?

Is it worrisome that we haven't heard anything official on Vogelbach or Baez? I know it seems up in the air, but the rumors at UNC still say Maples is signing.

if the cubs are giving vogelbach over a million more than slot, he's signing. baez doesn't really have a clear college option so i can't imagine he doesn't sign. that one worries me less because worst case scenario we just get an extra pick next year.

I understand and agree and certainly think they'll be signed. I just thought we would have heard official word by now

it's hard to tell if some of the big top 10 names have signed. has rendon signed yet? wouldn't mind a couple of those guys holding out and not signing, since we stink and will have a top 10 selection next year.

I think ~20 first rounders haven't signed yet and there's an hour to go. The guy who has got murky (at best) college options will sign.

@keithlaw

Not high. Nonzero but not high. RT @lebonicus: @keithlaw What are the chances Cubs get a deal done with Dillon Maples?

Let's all laugh at him if he's wrong.
