Mariners Designate Milton Bradley For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes [May 9 at 1:01pm CST]

The Mariners designated Milton Bradley for assignment and recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero, tweets MLB.com's Greg Johns. In the likely event the Ms eventually release Bradley, they'll have to eat over $9MM in salary.

The Mariners shook up the roster a bit today, designating veterans Bradley and Ryan Langerhans for youngsters Peguero and Mike Wilson. Bradley, 33, hit .209/.298/.351 in 393 plate appearances for the Mariners since he was acquired from the Cubs for Carlos Silva and $9MM in December of '09. Essentially the Mariners took on Bradley for two years and $5MM in that bad contract swap.

Looks like that trade was a wash. Will someone else take a chance on MIlton?

Nah, that ended up a clear win for the Cubs. They saved 5 million and got 2.1 WAR out of Silva. Bradley had a -0.4 WAR for the Mariners. Someone may take a chance on Milton, but he's pretty much done.

Gotta wonder what happened here. I could see him being the type to get so up in his head that it falls apart, but he had his issues at other stops before Chicago, just seems strange that he would fall off a cliff after getting to Seattle.

My guess is yes. If he clears waivers the signing team would only have to pay a prorated portion of the minimum salary. Somebody would almost certainly be willing to risk that.

Last year, his BABIP indicates he was a bit unlucky. However, his FB rates the last two years have been 44.9% and 42.0%. That's not a good idea in Safeco. But even beyond that, his plate discipline seems to be eroding as quickly as his mental state. His strikeout rate is up over 30% and his once-prolific walk rate has dipped as well.

He's already burned through 8 teams in the league, none of which is likely to welcome his return. Of the remaining teams, I can't imagine more than a couple would have any more than a passing interest. The way I see it, it's likely Tampa Bay or bust. They're a saber-oriented front office which makes them more likely to value his potential contributions, they are in contention and trying to make due with a Fuld/Damon/Johnson trio across LF/DH, and Bradley's league-minimum pricetag matches up nicely with their thrifty ways. Also worth noting is that the media coverage is pretty light.

Of course, the wildcard in that proposal is Desmond Jennings. The Rays will delay free agency by a year if they keep him in the minors until this Saturday, but it will likely take into July to avoid Super-2 status. If they're inclined to think Bradley may rebound, it may do them some good to pick him up and give him a shot until July or so.

But ultimately, I think they'll pass. As will the rest of the league.

obligatory "I wouldn't mind taking a chance on him... As long as someone else is footing the bill" post.

I would mind. He's almost certainly not going to be better than any of our current starting outfielders and, if he's even willing to accept a 4th OF role, I'm not convinced he'd be better than Colvin can be. He'd be an upgrade over Reed Johnson, but most of our minor leaguers would and we wouldn't have the potential media circus of bringing Milton back with one of them.

I wouldn't really hate signing him because of that chance he regains his past form, but over the past nearly 400 PAs he's posted a sub-.700 OPS (and closer to .650). The chances of regaining his old form are quite slim, I'd think.

Knowing what the fan reaction alone would be if Milton were back on the Cubs is reason enough not to do it. That's ignoring what Milton's reaction would be in response to the fan reaction.

And it's really ignoring that the guy who looked for any possible way to get rid of him without actually running over him with his Land Rover still runs the team.

What's the thought process there? Bench DLee (who has been a notorious slow starter), move Scott to 1B, and Bradley in left over Pie/Reimold?

I wont put anything past the O's, but considering how close MacPhail and Hendry are, I'm sure he's privy to all the awful things Bradley did in his tenure with the Cubs that never made it to the press. Besides which, it seems awful early to pull the plug on a "big FA acquisition" like the O's sold DLee as being to the fans.

I was just hoping to see what would happen with Scott and MB in the same locker room.

Bradley would probably give Scott a white guy.
