Rest of NHL Playoffs / Offseason

seems kind of risky for a lateral move. both guys are the same age, but heatley has played 80+ games in 5 of the last 6 years (71 in the other year), and havlet is still havlat despite staying "healthy" most of last season. considering both are wingers and are both about the same caliber players, i don't really see the point. havlat has a lower cap hit and earns less than heatley, but he also has an additional year on his contract.

on a semi-related note, i'm still very happy we chose hossa over havlat.

I honestly think it has a lot to do with SJ failing year after year in the playoffs and trying to shake things up by making lateral moves and hoping that the players they get will perform better in the postseason.

havlat is A LOT more dynamic than heatley. heatley is just a finisher. he has some other skills, but he mostly just hawks around the net and in the circles looking for garbage and one-timers. havlat does a lot more than that.

i like it for SJ. havlat had 62 points on a team that lacks top end talent. he could be great in SJ. really a good trade for both teams. minny needed a finisher. havlat lead them with 22 goals last year. sad.

it just seems like havlat hasn't been the same since kronwall deleted him

54 and 62 points on offensively challenged teams. 73 and 78 games played. give him a real top line center and i think he'll be explosive again.

no one talks about minnesota either. even though they're in a huge hockey market, they're a terribly uninteresting team.

I think the Sharks are taking a good risk here. Havlat if healthy will do a lot to put the Sharks over the top. It was obviously not working for them with their current team so something had to be done. Of course I still think the biggest issue is Joe Thorton. He has figured out how to win playoff hockey against Detroit but then has folded like a tent in the WC finals two years in a row. Heatley is the type of player I just don't like(similar to Kane but Kane is a much better player). He has value but it is one dimensional. If he is not scoring he is not doing anything else to help the team win.

hell, last year he played almost every shift with Kyle Brodziak or Matt Cullen as his C; it's really impressive the points he was able to put up, considering

Ladd got a pretty nice extension.

The $22-million, five-year deal he received from the Jets was a long time coming. Ladd's agent, J.P. Barry, had the framework of an extension worked out with the Atlanta Thrashers months ago, but it never got completed.

Good for him. Really wish we had him back.

i was thinking about Washington's offseason and to me they look like the President's Cup favorites, on paper

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble

Brouwer-Johansson-Semin

Ward-Laich-Fehr

Green-Hamrlik

Alzner-Carlson

Wideman-Schultz

Vokoun-Neuvirth

wow.

Wideman sucks a lot. I mean it's nitpicking, but he's not good. I also don't think that second line is any good. They really need Johansson to take the next step. I think Tampa is better than them. But...I like Tampa and I've really soured on Washington in the last year.

I know I'm biased, but I'll take the Kings 6 defensemen over anyone's. Love our mix. Our defense, especially a real 2nd line center, is not going to allow many goals. Even fewer than last year I think. Hope Bernier takes the next step and steals starts from Quick.

Stamkos resigned with Tampa for 5 years with a cap hit around 7.4m. 5 years is an interesting number, considering the guy is 21 years old. He should be a huge target in a few seasons, and if Tampa doesn't start drumming up more interest with a successful run they would have to trade him before that time comes around.

not when they'll have the best 3rd line in hockey and maybe the deepest stable of defensemen, to go along with an elite goaltender

and if memory serves, he played on Chicago's top line much of the year they won the cup

But Chicago didn't win the President's Trophy ;)

Yeah, and certainly they know that. But once you get beyond 5-6 years it starts to get risky and the money gets so huge. So now they have a couple year window to win with what is a pretty talented team. And if they don't, they likely start from scratch.

crosby had to stop offseason workouts because of post-concussion. the pens say they're happy with how he's progressed and say this is the first setback in quite a while, but boy, this is bad news for them and the league as a whole.

The delays during the season were huge red flags, and if they are still coming up this summer, it is a very bad sign.
