We did really well from '99-'06. i imagine if we could find out what changed and addressed that we could probably do really well again. Oh wait, I think we all found it.

This is just so depressing. We are headed towards being Iowa in the post Alford era. Leonard's gone, Paul is likely gone, we have freshman that haven't seen the floor for the entire Big Ten season and are likely to transfer. Things are going to get bad...quickly. Thomas must hit a home run and make the right hire and given his track record of hiring basketball coaches, I'm not encouraged. He bungled the football hiring, and now he's devalued the basketball job by putting Weber on a skewer and letting him roast for a month and a half. Who wants to work for a boss like that? RIP Illinois basketball.

 

My list of acceptable replacements: Smart, Romar and Buzz Williams. I'd also throw out a feeler to Gary Williams, as he coached for years at a similar program in terms of prestige, little brother syndrome and rabid fan base. Anthony Grant doesn't excite me, he's done nothing at Alabama.

 

As for the Paint Crew comments, Purdue's student section didn't become anything great until Hummel's sophomore year. It's all cyclical. Illinois has been in the doldrums for six years now, and it's a lot harder to be in the Orange Krush than other student sections because you have to fundraise. You can't just show up buy a ticket and sit on the floor like at other schools. It's amazing people still care.

I don't think anyone alleges those teams as tourney teams anymore. They could each play their way in, but given their recent play, and the schedules, they'll all probably fall short.

 

And then Iowa State will be left out in favor of La Salle

He said he'd re-evaluate at the end of the year. It's all you really can say in that situation. I'd think if a potential coach were to be pissed off about that it would be an older guy not a young guy like Smart.

I think the money, chance to coach in the Big Ten, and being the state school in Chicago(see what I did there?) will make him want the job.
