Wait, I thought I was the only one who went "only the Cubs"

Hrmmm.... isn't this an interesting development?

Someone needs to take Quade to task for pinch hitting Reed there.

I still don't get why Fukudome and DeWitt weren't hitting there. Why have lefties on the bench when you won't use them?

Seriously. It isn't like those two players are going to be hurting for days off this season...as if that should matter anyways. Another game like this from Quade and...and I don't know. WTF.

This loss is annoying, but its not the end of the world I thought there were a lot of possitives to take from it. Marmol is gonna have these game where he implodes and hopefully all the wierd bloop hits dont happen in bunches like they did today. I was happy with the way Garza pitched and the continuing awesomeness of Castro.

Technically, Johnson replaced Soriano in the Top of the 9th, but the point remains. Fukudome has to hit there.

Yup. When Johnson took the AB I figured maybe Quade was doing something odd and was going to have him hit for Barney instead. Well, I guess I was hoping he was doing something weird, because I didn't want either to come up.

You've basically got the best right hander on the entire Pirates staff, and Fukudome and DeWitt never come off the bench. One of them actually plays one of the positions due up to bat.

It's a rather disappointing use of(or lack thereof) the bench in this situation. DeWitt already has a game winning hit notched on his belt this year. Fukudome has been hitting the ball well so far.

This one's on Marmol...

Have to agree with this. Yeah Castro's descision not to eat the ball was costly but Marmol gave up a walk and a single. His job is to shut them down and he didn't.

Just one of these things has to be different for us to at least be in extra innings:

-The Pena double is instead a grand slam, like it would have been in any other ball park.

-The Pirates don't get that dinky single in the 9th.

-Soriano or Soto gets the run in after Pena hit the double

-Byrd actually drives the ball to get the run in in the 9th

And other stuff that probably would have helped. But of course, everything goes perfectly against the Cubs and we lose. I try to be rational and not believe in any curses, but after dealing with this [expletive] time and time again, I need something to blame. God [expletive] damnit.

Or a number of their other bloop/fluky singles today.

Soto or Soriano should have knocked the run, but Ramirez should have scored on the double. He should have been standing on 2nd when the ball hit the wall and scored easily.

And no, I'm not saying he doesn't hustle.

The only thing I can think of is Quade wants to see what Reed and Barney are made of early in the season or something like that. Even though Reed has never hit righties and Barney has never hit. I'm really having a hard time grasping Quade's logic there.

Shut up, I'm allowed to complain in the heat of the moment even though it isn't a big deal. That's what game threads are for.

Why would you think that?

Um, perhaps because that's what they've always been for? Ski was by far not the only one complaining about the Cubs today.

It sure is awesome that we spent the offseason getting more left handed, eh?

There is a difference between complaining and "Only the Cubs" BS.

There's complaining and being critical and then there's the "only the Cobs" garbage that of course you're not going to be annoyed by.

Seriously, you had people saying the Pirates are the luckiest team in baseball. Let that sink in for a bit.

If it was me, I probably pinch hit DeWitt there, but I can't muster up too much anger at Barney hitting. He was 1 for 3 against a RH already today, DeWitt is not a good hitter even against RHP. Johnson over Kosuke is egregious though. Move Colvin to LF and bring in Fukudome if you have to remove Soriano, you have to know that their RH closer is coming in if there is a bottom of the 9th.

I just can't fathom any reasonable excuse for Reed to hit there. I don't think it could have been anymore obvious that Kosuke should have been the hitter.

No, not even a little bit. Game threads are for discussing the game, not saying things you know aren't true/are exaggerated just because you're annoyed.

Ramirez is dead to rights at 1B if he does that and Jones catches the ball. I can't fault him for not scoring there.

Exactly. The GM talks for years about the need to be more left handed, and then 2 left handed bats never bat in a game that never saw a lefty pitcher at any time during the game. I can live with that in a blow out game or in a game there just isn't a good situation to use the lefty bats. But, there were definitely opportunities.

I hope Quade doesn't make that mistake again.

Well, you can't go all year without an extremely frustrating bad-beat like this. Glad to get it out of the way so we wont have to deal with any more like that.

This made me feel slightly better, thanks.

Why can't we play Fuk or Colvin in CF. Byrd is not a full time starter..

This one's on Marmol...

Theres also the 4th inning when we loaded the bases and scored 2 and still has guys o2nd and 3rd with 0 out. Also, Byrd hitting a 1st pitch into a tailor made double play after a crucial error gave us the chance to at least tie it up with anything but that.

Disagree, I think Byrd's a full time starter just not a #3 hitter.

A lot to look back at and be happy with. Garza with 12 k's. Woody getting out of a jam with the help of a perfect throw by Colvin. Castro with 2 triples. Pena taking one to the well with the bases loaded. Wish Castro would have held onto that slow dribbler. The next hitter hit into a double play. He's been so godlike, he probably figured he could get the throw to 1st quickly enough for Pena to go home with the throw to get the double play.

But saying things you know aren't true/are exaggerated because you're happy and excited is ok then.

Got it. Double standard in effect.

Yeah, and I really don't have a problem experimenting with him in the 3 spot if he's on one of those crazy hot streaks. However, he clearly hasn't found his stroke yet and should look for it down in the 6th or even 7th spot rather than leave Castro stranded yet again.
