Buster_ESPN: Source: Pujols's side is trying to extract every possible nickel in offer from MIA; would then be in position to take that to StL for last.

Very pleased to know that Albert will NOT be giving St. Louis any discounts this time.

Yes, he's heavy. But what does that matter, exactly? The chart merely separates players based on weight-height ratio. Some of those players would look like Arnold Schwarzenegger, some like Jabba the Hut. Some of those players would be really good, some would be really bad. I have no idea, Fielder may age horribly -- maybe even because of his weight -- but I'm not convinced that's presaged. I need more than 200ish players over the course of MLB history that may or may not even have similar body types or skill-sets.

Good or bad doesn't matter all that much when the only thing you're being compared against is your own production. You have a valid point about whether a heavy player is in shape or not could affect the results, but that only undercuts the argument that Fielder isn't likely to age poorly... unless your contention is that all the heavy guys who are actually in shape are the ones who drag down the overall aging curve for the unabashed fatties like Fielder. And that one doesn't pass the sniff test. If anything it would make sense to expect Fielder to age worse than even the standard heavy player, given he over-qualifies for that designation by a good 40 pounds.

I'm not saying anything is written in stone. But make no mistake about it... Fielder carries more risk than most are willing to admit. It needs to be a serious consideration before offering him that 6th or 7th year.

Perhaps I'm missing something in the writer's argument. Wouldn't you expect that a correlation to a "normal player" would support the commonly accepted age range for a player's peak years of 27-32? This chart suggests that a player's peak years are 23-28. Just curious.

It really varies too much between different types of players to be useful to generalize, but player peaks are much younger than most people realize. 27-32 is far too old.

This.

Wrong. Dusty Baker said that Roger Craig said that players peak at 32-34.

Prince Fielder Rumors: Wednesday

By Steve Adams [December 7 at 2:54pm CST]

The latest on slugger Prince Fielder...

The Cubs' pursuit of Fielder has probably been overblown, GM Jed Hoyer told MLB.com TV.

The Marlins' interest in Fielder has been exaggerated, a good source tells Tom Haudricourt.

The Marlins are already in pursuit of Fielder, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network, as signs indicate the Cardinals will re-sign Albert Pujols.

The Rangers are not in on Fielder, president Nolan Ryan told reporters.

Apparently nobody is interested in Fielder and he'll likely sign a 1/1.5 deal with the A's,

Need to see what Hoyer said and if it isn't being misinterpreted. It's sad that you can't trust these people to accurately portray what is being said.

Fielder shockingly settles for 6/$120 from the Brewers.

Pujols takes 10/$225 from the Cardinals.

The Cubs get a rock.

While this isn't collusion per se, it certainly seems like a coincidentally coordinated effort to out-Boras Boras. Overall, it is good to see smart executives in a number of cities who don't panic the moment Boras plants a story about a "mystery team".

Regarding all of the overblown rumors of teams being interested in players I think that the agents exaggerate the teams interest and GMs and other team execs try to downplay the rumors and in the end what you get is teams that are somewhat interested in the players.

I'm not going back 20/30/40 pages to look for it, but wasn't there a quote, from Hoyer, in this thread stating that the Cubs were involved with both Pujols and Fielder? I'm guessing that's what is leading David to say that.

Hoyer is on in 5 minutes on MLB Network with Reynolds and Gammons. Should be good.

15 min before I leave work....awesome... :banghead:

Probably right on the Cards and Pujols but if the Brewers don't up Fielders offer, the Jays, Mariners, Orioles or even Cubs will jump in with something like 7/150.

Buster_ESPN: The Cubs much more likely to get involved with Prince Fielder than they have been on Pujols, because his age fits their plan better.

They asked Jed straight up: 'What about Prince, why not build around him?" Jed: "If you consider him a long term asset, then that is a guy we talk about. We are looking for long term assets". Harold Reynolds: "Boy, you're good, you gave us nothing".

He also said the farm system lacks the depth they want to sustain success. He mentioned Z having to do the right things instead of saying the right things. He basically did not show any indication what they are or aren't doing with Fielder.
