“He’s just one of those special guys that come around once in a lifetime,” he said. “He should’ve played the game in the 1950s, 60 and 70s,m when guys played every day, played as hard as they possibly could every single day. They cared about winning. They cared about their teammates. Prince is all those things.”

I kind of don't like Sveum.

Bring back Quade! At least he was funny to look at.

It's not like he's saying it about some slap happy grit box. I like those things too when great players do it.

Put me on board with what jersey said. Watching people who a month ago were preaching not overpaying in years and/or dollars for fat/old 1B now starting to panic is entertaining.

I can understand not wanting to go beyond five years for Fielder, but I can't imagine realistically believing that five years will be enough. I know I'd rather give Fielder a six and/or seventh year than give one of the pitchers a sixth and/or seventh year next year. Unfortunately, I think the Cubs have little choice but to do both thanks to the current state of the major league team and upper minor league players within the Cubs' system.

Six years on Fielder doesn't bother me. Even seven I could bite the bullet and do.

Eight-plus is too much.

How many years do you feel confident about getting high-level production? How many years after do you feel confident getting above average production?

He's saying that today's players don't care about winning and don't care about their teammates. Sure it's a compliment and a positive attribute of Fielder, but saying that isn't too far off from all the other idiotic baseball musings by old timers.

You guys read into things a bit too far sometimes.

No that's exactly what he said.

Nothing wrong with playing the game the right way. I just prefer that he play the game the right way and produce like Ryne Sandberg and not like Augie Ojeda.

Prince Fielder: Report: Mariners front-runner for 1B Fielder

Prince Fielder - 1B - MLW - Dec. 6 - 3:39 pm et

The Mariners are now considered the front-runners for free agent Prince Fielder, according to ESPN's Jim Bowden.

This is speculation and not fact, but at least its based in sound logic. The Brewers, Cubs and Blue Jays all want Fielder to agree to a shorter contract, which hampers their odds. The Brewers offered six years for $120 million, Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopolous said they're not willing to offer more than five years and the Cubs' strategy is to offer a higher annual salary for fewer years. If the Mariners get aggressive, Fielder might be there for the taking. Of course, the Rangers have been relatively quiet on the Fielder front and could suddenly emerge with a big offer. Dec. 6 - 3:39 pm et

This is just getting depressing. Once again, though, I trust Theo but I can't watch this team lose 95 games next year. I'd like to have a good summer of baseball.

You saw how old this was and you decided it probably wasn't posted here?

Bill DeWitt Jr. on Pujols: "I'm hopeful, but I don't like to use the word 'optimistic.'"

More DeWitt on Pujols: "We're realistic about the fact that it may not happen."

Why don't we wait until, say... Februrary at the earliest before anyone makes the conscious decision to consider writing off the season, yeah?

I agree with that. I will let the winter meetings play out and see who signs where. If Pujols and Prince are still on the board, I will feel better. I actually want Fielder more than Pujols.

This is reading into things too far.

No, it's reading exactly what he said. He should have played in the good old days because he actually cares.

No, it's reading too far into it. No matter how absolutely you claim it isn't.

You people aren't very good readers if you need it explained in black and white for you.

I think they just have to do enough to keep it close. If they're close, he'll stay. And the Cards would almost certainly give him the NTC. Not that they could ever get away with trading him.

Indeed. However, the Marlins do seem just crazy enough to try and outbid them again.

I get the sense that Pujols told the Cards long ago that he'll check everything out and if they'll pay him within a certain amount of the best offer, he's staying. That said, part of me thinks he's not gotten close from them what the Marlins have offered.
